What exactly is hypermobility? Some everyday examples include elbows or knees that extend beyond a straight position, thumbs that move unusually far towards the forearm, fingers that bend back further than expected, or being able to place your palms flat on the floor while keeping your knees straight.
But here's the important part:
Hypermobility isn't automatically a problem.
Some people have naturally hypermobile joints and experience no difficulties whatsoever. For others, increased joint movement can be associated with things such as joint instability or discomfort.
It's also important to distinguish flexibility from hypermobility. Being flexible doesn't necessarily mean that someone is hypermobile.
Your body's range of movement is individual, and understanding how your joints move is part of understanding your body.
