Dr Nico Lourens has been practising as a specialist Urologist since 2017. He completed his specialist training at the University of Pretoria, graduating with an MMed in Urology cm laude, and obtained his Fellowship in Urology through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

He has particular interests in Paediatric Urology, urological cancer and complex urological conditions, and combines his clinical practice with an active interest in research and academic medicine.

Dr Lourens works in private practice and is currently completing a joint PhD through the University of Pretoria in South Africa and Aarhus University in Denmark, with research focusing on the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying disorders of s*x development..

Do the F.A.S.T. test:
Face: Ask the patient to smile. Is one side of the face drooping?
Arm: Ask the patient to lift their arms. Is one arm weaker than the other?
Speech: Ask the patient to read a sentence out loud. Is their speech slurred?
Time: If the patient has even one symptom, it could be an indicator of a stroke. Get to a hospital F.A.S.T. Every second counts.

When Mrs Hlongwa arrived at Life Hilton Private Hospital’s acute rehabilitation unit following a serious health event, walking independently seemed out of reach. Nearly three months later, she walked out of the unit with renewed confidence and independence.

Her recovery journey reflects the strength and determination of patients and the role that acute rehabilitation can play in helping people to regain function, mobility and quality of life after injury or illness.
