Renewing my driver’s license today at the Gautrain station in Sandton. Some mixed reviews. I give the proper fess a learn 5/10 experience.

✅ I loved the fact I could book online and got a time in 2 weeks at a location close to me. This beat my previous experience of getting to Randburg licensing department early to join some random queue which is wasn’t quite sure what you should do etc
✅❌ if you need a temporary license you should have 2 ID photos. But when you get there you don’t actually need them, unless they are offline. They ended up offline. At least I had them. Previously running around Randburg having photos on the street with some whiteboard behind my head
❌ it is not actually clear where you have to park. I tried the Gautrain station, but if you are there for more than 1hr it will be R135. So off to Santon City I went. Now this is fine as I am fit and able bodied. But what about wheelchair bound, perhaps using crutches, elderly, invisible disability like a heart or lung condition which may impact my walking ability. Or is it fair if I have one of those that I pay extra for parking at the Gautrain, is that financial exclusion.
❌ up the escalator or lift and then to get to the department a flight of stairs. When I asked what they did for differently abled ♿️🩼people I was told they would accommodate them downstairs in the motor vehicle licensing. No signposting or stickers to indicate that.
❌ typical bumb shuffle along chairs. A numbering system apparently is in place but was offline so someone inside shouted
“next”. What about those with a hearing impairment 🧏‍♀️.

I did ask about all of the above, was told this was better and that I should lower my expectations.

It’s good to look around at your environment and consider hidden barriers to inclusivity.

Today, on the 50th anniversary of the 1976 uprising, we remember the courage of the generation that changed South Africa. Their spirit of resilience lives on in everything we do.

In musculoskeletal health, that same spirit is driving a shift: we’re trading passive, outdated fixes for active, informed recovery. We’re taking charge of our movement, challenging the status quo, and building a stronger, more resilient future, one step at a time.

Let’s keep pushing boundaries and moving with purpose. Happy Youth Day! 👊🇿🇦

I love watching Comrades — on the road and on TV. Today I was lucky enough to do both.

Every year I’m reminded that every single runner standing on that start line has already achieved something remarkable. They qualified. They put in the early mornings, the long runs, the sacrifices, the attention to nutrition, and the mental preparation. Every runner has a story.

But today also reminds me that no one gets to Comrades alone.

Behind every runner are the people who made space for them to train, who supported them through the tough days, listened to endless running stories, adjusted family schedules, waited patiently, and stood on the sidelines cheering them on.

Comrades is about so much more than 89 kilometres between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. It’s about commitment, perseverance, community, and the people who help us achieve things we never thought possible.

Congratulations to every runner, every supporter, every volunteer, and everyone who played a part in making today happen. What an incredible day to witness the spirit of Comrades.

Think about…
“What am I aiming for? Who is supporting me? And what makes those goals possible?”

How you go into surgery will determine how your recover from surgery.

How you go into surgery will determine how your recover from surgery.

This post is about preparation. What you do in the weeks and months before surgery can make the difference between a slow, painful recovery and a smooth, confident return to movement. It also affects the complication rates. Prehab, fitness, and metabolic health are the tools that turn a successful operation into a successful outcome. This is where you take back control before the first incision is ever made.

Getting a new knee is a big deal, but many people treat it like flipping a switch. You go in broken and come out fixed. That is not how it works. Surgery is only one part of the process. What you do before the operation can strongly influence what happens afterward, sometimes even more than the surgery itself.

Everyone has heard of rehab, but far fewer people talk about prehab. Prehabilitation simply means getting yourself in the best possible condition before surgery. Stronger legs, better endurance, lower inflammation, and a healthier metabolism all improve recovery. People who go into surgery strong and fit recover faster, use fewer pain medications, and regain independence more quickly. Very few of you are at the stage where you wouldn’t benefit from prehab or can’t do it.

What can you do to improve your chances of a complication-free, more rapid recovery? More than you might think.

For a deeper, evidence-based breakdown of this, I shared more on my Facebook subscriber hub. The link in the comments if you’re interested.

raising awareness of mental health for healthcare providers (but actually everyone). We all have our ups and down.
These can be transient in the day or last weeks and months. It can be slow and insidious.
When you see those crazy socks use them as a check in, “how and I doing?”, and perhaps check in with a friend, colleague, employee or boss “how are you doing?”
Let’s rock those socks…

A few weeks ago we completed Freedom Runs for Freeodm day challenge. A challlenge I started over 10 years ago with friends to run at 9 parkrun venues in Gauteng. We ran the challenge for 5 years and decided it was time for a break. This year it seemed fitting to start the challenge again. After a few years of finding running harder I had started doing parkruns again and having new challenges. Over a coffee the idea for doing the challenge again became a reality.
Often we need to reset our goals and change direction. We never know where that journey can take us. The journey had its ups and downs but people enjoyed the challenge and it was a memorable day.

Following the spirit of Freedom Day, parkrunners across the country found their own unique way to celebrate, not just with a single 5k, but with a challenge that stretched across communities, routes, and personal limits around Johannesburg. “Freedom Runs for Freedom Day” is more than just a r....

Get moving.
Global move for health day was celebrated on Sunday 10 May 2026. It encourages movementent for good health.

I have been doing 100 sqats per day. It probably takes me about 6 minutes through the day. It was a silly challenge started with a friend in preparation for hyrox at the end of the month. Wall balls have been one of our toughest stations. We decided 100 squats a day would be good extra prep. What could you do for 1 minute every day to help you? Let us know in the comments.
