For some, breastfeeding comes naturally. For others, it takes patience, perseverance, support, and sometimes a few tears along the way. Every journey is different, and every journey deserves to be celebrated.

My baby is putting everything in his mouth... is he teething?

Ask Dr Christa: How to manage your child's fever.

Did you know that fever is one of the most common reasons parents bring their children to the emergency department? It can be frightening, especially because many parents worry about febrile seizures.

The good news is that fever itself is usually not harmful.

In fact, fever is a sign that your child's immune system is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It is part of the body's natural defence against the viruses and bacteria that are so common during winter.

Fever is often the first symptom of many viral and bacterial infections. Some illnesses, such as Influenza A and B, Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease and Roseola (also known as baby measles), are particularly well known for causing high fevers.

When fever strikes, it helps to have a simple plan.

Giving eye drops to your child can feel almost impossible.

Parents often find it stressful to give eye drops prescribed for infective or allergic conjunctivitis (pink eye).

Trying to pry open tightly closed little eyes can be upsetting for everyone involved. It often takes two adults, one to gently hold your child and another to try to get the drops into the eye.

While it's usually a little easier with young babies, toddlers and even older children can be quite a challenge.

Over the years, I've found a simple, gentle technique that makes giving eye drops much easier and far less traumatic for both children and parents.

Diaper rash... Is it fungal or not? Although diaper rashes are very common in young infants, they can be difficult to treat.

A common dilemma new parents may find themselves in is deciding what kind of rash it is... fungal or not?

An irritant like urine, acidic poo, sensitivity to detergents and soaps or even an allergy to products or types of diapers, can all be the cause of a common diaper rash.

Although some irritation in the nappy area may precede a true yeast diaper rash, it is in fact caused by a fungal infection called candida.

Candida is a common organism living in and on our skin, mouth, gut and in the ge***al area. It is usually present in small amounts, but at times an overgrowth of candida can cause a yeast infection, and one of the ways it can present is with a very stubborn and often severe diaper rash.

INFLUENZA HAS ARRIVED... AND WITH A VENGEANCE.

Over the past few weeks, I have seen many children (and their parents) presenting with symptoms.

Since COVID, it seems that our influenza season, which was usually seen later in July or August, has shifted much earlier in the year.

In 2020 and 2021, during the height of our COVID pandemic, we hardly saw any flu cases. The reduced transmission during this time has led to waning community immunity against the influenza viruses, and after the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, we saw a substantial increase in flu cases.

This year seems to be the same, if not worse.
