For many years, women endured abuse in marriage. A major contributor to this was toxic African traditional teachings about marriage.
Women were taught that โa man will always cheat,โ
that โa good woman should stay for the children,โ and many other beliefs that required women to operate like robots in marriage.
As a result, many women remained trapped in TOXIC marriages because endurance was glorified and DIVORCE was shamed.
But things have changed.
Women have learned to speak up for themselves.
And although there is still a lot of stigma around DIVORCE, more women are choosing to stand up for themselves, regardless of the shame they may receive from family and friends.
However, while this is supposed to be a victory, it has created another problem. We now have more women who are no longer physically stuck in abusive marriages but are still mentally and emotionally trapped.
This happens because many women are either unaware of, or unwilling to do the inner work required after leaving a TOXIC marriage.
And if this continues, in the next 10โ20 years, we may experience a shift where we have more bitter divorced women than women stuck in abusive marriages.
We are already seeing this slowly happening, where a woman who claims to be free from an abusive marriage sounds bitter every time she speaks about her past.
This is because the damage caused by a toxic marriage is too deep to be healed simply by filing for divorce.
Healing takes time.
You must process the trauma in order to become whole again.
You need a therapist more than you need a lawyer during the divorce process. Seek therapy and counselling to help you put everything in the past the right way.
