✨This passage comes from M. Masud Khan, the influential British-Pakistani psychoanalyst known for his deep, often unsettling insight into the hidden architecture of the self. Writing in the tradition of Donald Woods Winnicott, whose ideas about the “true self” and “false self” shaped his own thinking, Khan opens with T. S. Eliot’s meditation on how much reality human beings can truly bear...a fitting frame for what follows.

✨He goes on to describe the quiet fractures we carry: the parts of ourselves formed by both nurture and neglect, and the fear that keeps us from ever being fully known, even to those nearest to us. Yet Khan’s closing words offer a reminder that whatever was hidden in childhood, whatever went unmet, is not lost forever. It waits, he suggests, with remarkable patience, to be found.

🪽There’s a kind of honesty in Jean d’Ormesson’s words that most of us avoid. We’re taught to chase the roses and flinch from the thorns, as if a good life were one where the hurt simply doesn’t happen. But he doesn’t ask us to choose.

🥀🌹He asks us to remember both: the grief and the stranger who helped anyway, the loss and the sunset that caught us off guard. Because the roses were always there too. We just have a talent for forgetting them.

🪽To live honestly, then, isn’t to balance the scales or wait for the pain to pass before we let ourselves feel joy again. It’s to let them sit in the same room: the ache and the gratitude, the ending and the beginning and call that, simply, a life.

🥀Grief and endings touch every one of us, whether it’s the close of a relationship, a life stage, or a chapter we didn’t expect to lose.

🥀 In this post, our psychologist Sarkis Gudjelian, M.A., Sarkis Gudjelian reflects on why endings are so hard to face, and how psychotherapy can help us hold grief without being defined by it.

🖋️Online Psychoanalytic Reading Group

🧠 Some ideas can only be understood slowly, sentence by sentence, in conversation with others. That’s the spirit behind our ongoing Online Psychoanalytic Reading Group.

🖋️ WHAT WE READ

Each session, we open the work of a different psychoanalytic thinker, from the foundational to the contemporary and sit with their ideas together. We’re not just reading theory; we’re asking how these concepts show up in the therapy room, in our patients, and in ourselves. Expect rich discussion, diverse perspectives, and the kind of thinking that deepens both your clinical practice and your own self-reflection.

🖋️ WHO CAN JOIN

Whether you’re a clinician looking to sharpen your theoretical lens, a student of the mind, or simply curious about the psychoanalytic tradition, this group is a space to explore, question, and grow alongside others who love this work as much as we do.

🖋️ JOIN ANYTIME

Our Online Psychoanalytic Reading Group runs on a rolling basis, so you’re never too late to join our conversation

📖 This week’s pick: A Story of Love and Violence by Olivier Bourdeaut (Gallimard, April 2026).

🪽 This memoir hits differently. Bourdeaut doesn’t judge or excuse his violent father, he tries to understand him, tracing what gets passed down through generations and what can finally be broken.

What strikes most is his honesty: the clear eyes of an adult naming his father’s abuse, alongside the child’s voice that still loved him anyway. In my practice, I see this loyalty constantly, how unexamined wounds quietly shape the next generation. This book shows the cycle can break, but only with the courage to look closely at where you came from.

Not every inheritance is material. Some are emotional... and transforming what we received before passing it on may be the greatest act of love we can offer our kids.

🐾 The bond between you and your pet is backed by science.

🐾 A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Psychology followed 188 dog and cat owners over five days, capturing their emotions and stress levels in real time and the results are both fascinating and deeply human.

🐾 Interacting with your companion animal is genuinely linked to more positive emotions and less negativity in daily life. And the most touching part? It didn't matter whether they had a dog or a cat. The emotional benefit was real either way. Because at the end of the day, it was never really about the species. It was always about the bond. 🐾
