Today was our 5th ‘Navigating life with a Stoma’ education session by the Ileostomy Association of SA. We discussed different types of stomas, the stoma appliance scheme, products available, common Stomal complications and what to do and lastly lifestyle tips and tricks. Lots of amazing questions and stories shared. Many thanks to everyone who attended and our local reps from Braun, Dansac and Coloplast who attended for trade display.

Spotlighting an important issue

A stoma nurse helped David Platt feel comfortable after a significant medical procedure, but now South Australia's largest regional city is nearly without the service.

HIDDEN DISABILITIES

Did you know that living with a stoma can sometimes mean needing a little extra support when travelling or attending busy public places?
A stoma may not be visible, but the challenges can be very real. From needing quick access to toilet facilities and changing spaces, to managing anxiety, fatigue or unexpected situations, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
🎗️ The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple way of discreetly indicating that you may need additional assistance. It can be helpful when travelling through airports, attending major events, visiting busy venues and in many other public spaces.

🌻 South Australians — did you know Adelaide Oval is a keen supporter?
You may have noticed the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower stickers around the Oval. At the East Gate entrance, look for the volunteers who are happy to assist people who are wearing the sunflower or who require additional support.
Adelaide Oval also has a Sensory/Hidden Disabilities Room, providing a quieter space for people who may become overwhelmed by the busy event environment.
And importantly for our stoma community, Adelaide Oval also has a separate changing room available for stoma patients who need it.

These small measures can make a huge difference — helping people feel more confident to get out, attend events, travel and participate without worrying about whether support will be available.

So, if you live with a stoma or another hidden disability, remember:
🌻 You are allowed to ask for help.🌻 You are not “being difficult” by asking for what you need.🌻 Planning ahead can make travel and events much less stressful.🌻 Look out for Hidden Disabilities Sunflower schemes wherever you go.

Honored to visit a dedicated healthcare facility today for Stomal Training!

Today, I had the privilege of joining a local aged care facility in Adelaide to educate staff on basic stoma care and managing complications. Their commitment to providing the best possible care for their Ostomates is so pleasing to see. We had an engaging, interactive session filled with questions, shared experiences, and learning.

I love educating and it’s always a pleasure to collaborate with such passionate professionals.
