For patients with complex foot and ankle conditions, 3D reconstruction can offer a more detailed view of the deformity than standard X-rays alone. This can help surgeons better understand the anatomy, assess the complexity of the problem, and plan surgery with greater detail before entering theatre.

Thoughtful pre-operative planning is an important part of complex foot and ankle reconstruction, and 3D planning is one of the tools that can help support this process.

Many people think stiffness in the big toe is just a bunion.

In reality, hallux rigidus is a form of osteoarthritis affecting the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. It involves stiffness and loss of motion in the big toe joint.

Symptoms of hallux rigidus:
• Stiffness when walking
• Pain during push-off
• Difficulty wearing certain shoes

Although they involve the same joint, bunions and hallux rigidus are different conditions — and in some cases, they may occur together.

Early diagnosis and intervention can help manage symptoms and slow progression, improving overall outcomes.

Does your big toe hurt when you walk?

That sharp pain at the base of your big toe could be hallux rigidus — a form of arthritis that makes the joint stiff and painful when pushing off during walking.

Common signs include:
• Pain in the big toe joint (base of the big toe), often during or after walking
• Stiffness of the big toe (harder to move it up and down)
• Swelling around the big toe joint
• A bump or deformity just at the base of the big toe

Nearly a decade ago, Dr Christy Graff volunteered in Malawi, caring for children with significant limb deformities.

Experiences like these tend to stay with surgeons. In paediatric orthopaedics, correcting a deformity is never just about the immediate result — each decision must consider growth, durability, and the many years of movement ahead.

That perspective continues to shape Dr Graff’s approach today, particularly when caring for children with complex foot and limb deformities.
