Choosing a support worker for your child can feel like a big call, especially if you're new to the NDIS or the last match didn't work out.

Our latest blog covers what to look for in a support worker, the questions worth asking any provider before you commit, and the red flags that tell you to keep looking.

Forcing eye contact. Staying quiet when they'd rather not. Holding in the urge to stim. Copying what everyone else is doing so they don't stand out.

Keeping that up for six hours straight takes an enormous amount of effort, and by the time your child walks through the door, there's nothing left in the tank. The meltdown you see at home is what happens when the mask finally comes off, in the one place they feel safe enough to drop it.

If your child has watched KPop Demon Hunters more times than you can count, has strong opinions on their favourite group, and lights up the second K-pop comes on, Anna is going to be their favourite person.

She's a K-pop dancer herself, so this isn't small talk for her, it's a genuine shared interest she brings into sessions.

Anna is also completing her Masters of Counselling and spent years as a School Support Officer working with neurodiverse kids aged 5 to 16, so the connection is backed by real experience, not just a shared playlist.

She's based in Fullarton and currently taking new bookings, but spots like this don't sit open for long.

Meet Gigi 💛

Some support workers just have a way of clicking with kids. Gigi is one of them.

She's great at tuning in to where a young person is at, whether they want to dive into the thing they're completely obsessed with right now, work through something tricky together, or just hang out with no pressure to perform.

For a lot of kids, that easygoing, genuine approach is exactly what helps them relax and start to open up.

That's when the good stuff happens. It's the difference between a child who looks forward to their session and one who just gets through it.

We talk a lot about interests being a way in.

For some young people it's gaming, for others it's dinosaurs, drawing, music, or knowing absolutely everything there is to know about trains. Whatever it is, it's often where confidence and connection start.

Belonging shouldn't come with conditions.

When a young person feels accepted as they are, they can put their energy into growing and figuring out who they are, instead of spending it on masking or squeezing into a mould that was never made for them.

There's something special about watching a young person light up over an interest they love.

A program we came across recently does exactly that. It uses Dungeons & Dragons to help neurodivergent kids and teens build confidence and connect with others, all through storytelling and play.

There's no pressure to socialise in the "typical" way, yet real friendships still form. Imagination does the heavy lifting.

So often our young people get viewed through the lens of what they find hard.

Stories like this are a good reminder of what becomes possible when they're understood and accepted exactly as they are.
