I listened to an online session last night where emotions were being described as “negative” and “positive” states — and it really got me thinking.
I don’t think emotions are inherently good or bad.
They’re information. They’re experiences. And sometimes they’re uncomfortable as hell.
But when we start labelling certain emotions, states or behaviours as “bad”, we can very quickly add shame to the experience.
And then we don’t just experience sadness, anger, fear or overwhelm…
We start thinking there’s something wrong with me for feeling this way.
R U OK? Day is a really good opportunity to notice this — not just in how we respond to other people, but in how we respond to ourselves.
What labels have you learned to put on your emotions?
And what happens when someone else isn’t OK?
I’m going to explore some of these things a little more this week. 💙
