Winter has a way of making us want to press pause.
The mornings are darker. The quilt is warmer. Motivation can be a little harder to find.
But what if this wasn’t the season to simply “get through”?
What if it became the season to gently rebuild your energy, create healthier habits and look after the one person who carries you through every busy day…you.

You don’t need to overhaul your life.

Just choose one small habit.

Then repeat it tomorrow.

Your future self will thank you.

Which small habit are you choosing this week?

It's nice to see the scientific research acknowledging how chiropractic care can help to support women through some of life's biggest transitions ~ pregnancy, the fourth trimester (recovering from birth and becoming a hands on mum), returning to being strong, active and doing the things you love. I find it a great joy and honour to work with women through their pregnancies and beyond.

Your shoulder is one of the most mobile parts of your body - but that freedom comes at a cost.
Healthy shoulder movement depends on your shoulder blade, upper back, rib cage, muscles and nervous system working together.
That’s one reason why I never look at the shoulder in isolation.
Whether you’re lifting shipping, reaching into the pantry, carrying children or enjoying Pilates, your whole body contributes to how your shoulder feels and functions.
Sometimes small changes elsewhere can influence how easily the shoulder moves.
Understanding those connections is one of my favourite parts of practice.
When your body moves well together…life simply feels easier.

🧠 Happy World Brain Day!!

When most people think about brain health, they think puzzles, fish oil or crosswords.

They're all worthwhile.

But here's something many people haven't considered...

Your brain depends on information coming from your body ~ especially your spine.

Every movement you make sends a constant stream of information to your brain about where you are in space, how you're moving, and how much effort you're using.

Research over the past two decades, including work by chiropractor and neuroscientist Dr Heidi Haavik, suggests that spinal function may influence how the brain processes this information. Studies have demonstrated changes in sensorimotor integration, movement control and cortical processing following chiropractic adjustments.

What does that mean in everyday life?

It means the goal isn't simply to chase pain.

It's about helping your nervous system function as efficiently as possible, so your brain has accurate information to work with.

For many people, that translates into moving more freely, feeling less tense, standing taller, and being better able to cope with the physical demands of everyday life.

No gimmicks.
No magic.
Just helping your body communicate with itself a little better.

If you've been living with persistent neck pain, headaches, back pain or stiffness, it may be worth exploring whether your spine is sending your brain the best information it can.

🧠 Happy World Brain Day.

This information is general in nature and is not a substitute for individual health advice.

❄️ A question I hear all the time in winter…

"Does cold weather really make joints ache more, or is it just in my head?"

If you've ever noticed your joints feeling stiffer or achier when the weather turns cold, you're certainly not alone.

Interestingly, while lots of people report this experience, scientific research hasn't yet confirmed a direct cause-and-effect relationship between cold weather and joint pain.

One leading theory involves barometric pressure (the air pressure that changes as weather systems move through). When air pressure drops before a cold front, our muscles, tendons and other tissues may expand ever so slightly. In some people, this may increase pressure within sensitive joints and contribute to discomfort.

So maybe Grandma wasn't imagining it when she said, "I can feel the rain coming in my knee!" 😉

The bigger winter challenge, though, is often less movement.

When it's cold and wet, it's tempting to hibernate. But joints are designed to move, and they generally feel happier when we keep them moving. Regular activity helps maintain joint mobility, muscle strength and overall function—whether you're 15 or 85.

🧣 Rug up and move every day—your body will thank you for it!

Even a 30-minute walk can make a noticeable difference.

If you're wondering what type of movement is right for you this winter, have a chat with Dr Tamara at your next visit. Together, we can help you find a simple, sustainable strategy to keep your joints moving well all season long.

At the Adelaide Chiropractic Centre we often highlight the “Dry July” campaign for our people. Its such a win-win ~ great to give your body a break from alcohol, AND the opportunity to raise funds for cancer research ~ a horror that has touched everyone in some way.

Hat’s off to those taking part.

Interestingly, and maybe not such a surprise, an article from Medscape (all the latest scientific literature on health) about

“Alcohol’s Health Myth Is Over”

found it’s way into my inbox.

Here’s an excerpt from Sari Harrar’s article:

“For nearly 30 years, the media and many physicians promoted the belief — fuelled by the French paradox and bias-ridden observational studies — that a drink or two a day could be good for many adults.

"Now, better-designed research has uncorked a new truth:

"Even one drink a day can raise the risk for cancer, cardiovascular problems, liver disease, and early death.

“The [American] government-commissioned Alcohol Intake and Health Study, published in June, found a level of drinking once considered potentially protective — a glass of red wine with friends, a beer on a summer night, a brunch-time cocktail — have no meaningful health benefits."

The new data shows even one drink a day increases the risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, liver disease and all cause mortality.

Now, that’s sobering.

Oncologist, Dr Noelle LoConte, was quoted in the article. She wanted to emphasise one thing to all of us: “Alcohol is different from many foods out there that seem to swing in and out of favour [as as scientific research clarifies their benefits to our health over time]. Alcohol isn’t like those. It’s always been a Class 1 carcinogen ~ like ultra-violet light, to***co and the human papillomavirus. And now, we’re solidifying the risk.”

***New Blog Post***
One of my absolute delights is taking part in the joyful anticipation and physical preparation my people go through in the lead up to a get away. This time of the year that takes the flavour of “please, life is just insane, I need a break” and “anywhere warmer than here!”

I often have people asking me, “how do I prepare for this?” There’s the million dollar question. How do you dodge having body pains taking the shine off your adventure or limiting your ability to get out there and do those things you were eagerly anticipating?

Prevention is the best protection against back pain.

Early intervention can help minimise deterioration after injury, reduce the severity of musculoskeletal conditions and lower the risk of ongoing issues by building good spinal health habits.

Looking after your spine doesn’t just support your body - it can also support your mental wellbeing, helping reduce stress and improve overall quality of life.

Adjust your thinking and join Spinal Health Month (1–30 June), because a healthy spine supports a healthy mind.
