Last Friday we had an informative session on hoists and viewing the latest state of the art technology on ceiling hoists.

Medical ceiling hoists help move a person between a bed, chair, or wheelchair without physical strain on caregivers. The ceiling hoist is a motorized lift unit, attached to an overhead track or rail fixed to the ceiling, and a supportive fabric sling.

Interesting case studies of two female patients in their 40s presenting with neck and shoulder pain with headaches which has occurred since they were children. Clinical assessment and probing about their histories revealed some key events which led to a muscular and nerve imbalance and thus their symptoms.

Patient A was in a car roll over accident at the age of 6 months and was flung out of the car. Fortunately she did not sustain more serious injuries however there was significant soft tissue damage which was left unaddresses. She has been suffering with her neck and shoulder condition majority of her life.

Patient B had a small benign tumor at the base of her skull identified at the age of six months. She went in for surgery to remove the tumor and over years the musculature has restricted around her neck causing her symptoms. Events and trauma as a child can impact on the well being of the body as an adult.

Early intervention is very important!

Both patients are improving well under the clinical care of practitioners @ PIH.
