Great info, especially on how to advocate for yourself if necessary.
Some NDIS staff can be quite pushy so please push back and be assertive around your rights.

If the NDIS calls you for a “check-in”, you do not have to discuss your support needs on the spot.

The Agency describes a check-in as a conversation about how your plan is going. In our collective experience, we know it can also lead to an unscheduled reassessment.

Before you answer questions about what support you use or whether you’re “doing okay”, find out what the call is actually about.

You can say:

“I don’t consent to having this conversation right now. I’m requesting that you please email me the request for the check-in, the reasons why, and confirm whether my plan is being reassessed or whether a reassessment is being considered. I’d like some appointment options to book a time when I’m prepared and my support person can attend.”

If they say it’s just a check-in, you can still book it for another time. If they pressure you to have the call the next day, ask for more time. You don’t have to agree to a time that suits them but leaves you unable to prepare or have your support person there.

Ask what they want to discuss, tell them to put it in an email. Gather your reports and write down what support you need day to day and what would happen without it. Be careful with “I’m fine” or “I’m managing”. If family or friends are filling the gaps, or you’re going without support you need, make sure the NDIA hears that too.

Always ask for a written summary of the conversation. If they tell you your plan is being reassessed, ask what evidence you can provide and when it’s due.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, ask for things in writing, and don’t let anyone pressure or sweet-talk you into agreeing to something you haven’t had time to understand.
