After 45 years in nursing, Redland Hospital Clinical Nurse Rosemary Sargent has retired and bid farewell to Metro South. Rosemary began her nursing training at Dalby Hospital in 1979, she joined Redland Hospital in 2000 and spent more than two decades caring for patients on Stradbroke Ward.

“When I started, we used paper records, glass IV bottles and glass syringes,” she said.

Metro South Health is helping build the future healthcare workforce by creating opportunities for students to gain practical experience and learn from experienced clinicians. 🫶

Among the staff supporting this work is Bayside Health Service Senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker Tahnee, who recently featured in a TAFE Queensland story highlighting the importance of mentorship, culture and community in shaping future careers.

Through partnerships with education providers including TAFE Queensland, students can develop skills, confidence and valuable workplace experience while exploring careers in healthcare.

Today, staff from Redland Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will take on the 35 km Bloody Long Walk to raise money for people living with mitochondrial disease, commonly known as Mito.

This fabulous team have already raised more than $4400 to support people living with Mito. They had a modest goal of $2500 and have blown past it…do you think we can get them to $5000??

Some of the most important work at Metro South Health happens quietly behind the scenes.

Redland Hospital’s Intensive Care Outreach Nurse (ICON) team help hospital staff recognise and respond early when a patient’s condition changes, providing expert clinical support, education and leadership across Redland Hospital. 🏥

By working closely with nurses, doctors and allied health teams, the ICON team helps ensure patients receive the right care at the right time; whether that means managing them safely on the ward or escalating care when it's needed.

Thank you to our ICON team for helping keep some of our sickest patients safe every day. 💙

For GP registrar Dr Kangxran Lim (Dr Kang), a placement on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) has been more than just a training opportunity.

Over the past three months, Dr Kang has worked across Marie Rose Centre, Redland Hospital and Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, gaining valuable experience while caring for patients across the Bayside community.

“Working at Marie Rose Centre, you get to know local patients and people are really friendly,” he said.

As we head into the cooler months, Dr Kang is hoping to see more of Australia's marine life from Straddie's amazing beaches after work 🙂

Every year, Metro South Health Emergency Department teams undertake research to better understand patient experiences and improve the care we provide. 👏

Thanks to the support of a $10,000 Emergency Medicine Foundation Emerge Grant, one of the latest projects is underway at Redland Hospital with research focused on patients experiencing both homelessness and suicidality.

Social Worker Katrielle Litster is undertaking the study which will bring together insights from patients and staff, with support from mentors Professor Marianne Wyder and Emergency Department Staff Specialist Dr Henry Tsao.

Staff across Metro South have stepped out in their funkiest socks today, in support of CrazySocks4Docs Day. 🧦

Hosted on Friday 5 June, the yearly sock-fest champions doctors, wellness, and supports in place across the hospital for our valuable medicos. 🩺

“Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day is a great reason to get together and remind ourselves of the enormous difference that the support of colleagues and friends can make,” said PA Hospital Executive Director of Medical Services, Dr Kellie Wren.

“By wearing our craziest socks, we are prompted to start conversations about wellbeing, challenge stigma, and highlight the message that seeking help is a sign of strength.” 💙

Popular sock designs this year included animals, food, and medical-themed prints. 💊

A big thank you to everyone who showed up in their best and brightest socks in support of our doctors.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of Amity Ward's first year. Here's to many more years of caring for our community.💖
