This is your permission to throw the complicated and time consuming morning routine that your algorithm is telling you to do OUT the window! Health pressure is way too much these days and I feel it’s contributing to more stress and cortisol dysregulation- we need to keep it simple! Here are some of the quick steps I think are actually worth it:

1- Ideal waking time is 5:30-6am- I promise you will be more tired if you sleep beyond 6:30am!

2- Start the day with 2 big glasses of room temperature water- around 500mls is the aim!

3- Have 1tsp of Apple cider vinegar in a little shot of water before breakfast to kickstart digestion for the day.

4- Breakfast before coffee always! And ensure it contains some protein for better cortisol regulation and blood sugar control for the day.

5- Morning dawn sunlight exposure. Ideally this would mean a nice walk outside to start the day if this works for you, otherwise try 5mins outside with the aim of gazing east towards the morning sun. If you can’t get outside, make sure all your curtains are open so you can intermittently look towards the sky. I try to lunchboxes right by my kitchen window to get this exposure in!

6- Morning supplements for your energy and nervous system- I love creatine, B vitamins and a lovely swig of herbal tonic.

Now feel free to add more steps such as morning stretches, meditation, journaling etc- whatever tickles your fancy! However if you don’t have the time or the patience, this list should keep it nice and concise and ensure you are well set up for the day ahead without the added stress of a 2hr routine.

Here is my 3rd post of my perimenopause posts (check out the others too if you haven’t already!). My patients often asked if we can run a blood test to see if they are in perimenopause or not. While it’s not really that simple as perimenopause is a continuous change in hormones over 7-10 years, bloods for hormone testing can be helpful to get some ideas on which hormones we can help support your body and your symptoms. It is not always black and white as the hormones are always changing it can give is some clues as to what to focus on- so I do recommend hormone testing as long as done at the right times of your cycle. Happy to answer any questions you may have via DM!

PERIMENOPAUSE is a hot topic for women at the moment. I love the awareness of this stage of life and I love supporting women and their hormones. I’ve been lucky enough to see lots of new patients in recent weeks with similar issues revolving around this topic and I’m going to do a little series of posts on the topic- so stay tuned!!

How many different types of plants should you be eating each week for your gut microbiome?

Research has found that the best levels of gut microbiome diversity and highest levels of healthy gut bacteria come from consuming over 30 different types of plants/veggies/fruit each week. People consuming less than 10 had much less microbe variance and lower levels overall. Different plants contain different fibres, prebiotics and phytonutrients that all support different types of gut bugs- so variation is key!

I quote this study a lot when discussing gut health with my patients! It’s so easy to get into the habit of having the same foods every day. An apple and a banana as your fruit. Broccoli, carrot and potato with dinner. The same simple salad at lunch. This may only get you to 10-12 different plants in a week which is not enough!

Consuming different plants every day of the week is key. Here are some ways to do it-
- aim for 2-3 different fruits each day. Vary between all that is in season and available, so rather than buying 6 apples for the week buy 2 red apples, 2 green apples (different colours of the same plant counts!), 2 plums, 2 banana, 2 mandarins, 2 oranges, 2 kiwi etc etc and split them up over the week.
- For your veggies, aim for different ones every day. If you have green beans, zucchini and broccolini one day, then the next aim for roasted pumpkin, sweet potato, potato and carrot the next, and a salad with mixed lettuce leaves (lettuce, rocket, baby spinach) with red and yellow tomatoes, cucumber, green and red capsicum. You get the idea!
- beans, lentils, chickpeas, nuts and seeds count too!
- so does herbs, onion and garlic.

It’s easier than you think when you adjust to food shopping in a way that means you get small serves of lots of things!

How many plants do you think you have been consuming in a week?

My story about dry skin and fish oils sparked lots of messages yesterday so I’ll share it as a post! This cool and very dry weather often means skin becomes very dry! My tip- this is the time to get started on a daily, good quality fish oil supplement. The fish oil helps the skins barrier integrity to lock in moisture and hydration, and gives a lovely healthy glow! There is a vast difference between a poor quality and a good fish oil- look for a concentrated one with a high level of EPA specifically.

We have seen such a spike in the last few weeks of kids getting sick with the start of the cooler weather- lots of snotty noses, big coughs, flu’s, gastro and a lot of impetigo going around too! You and your kids will benefit so much from a daily supplement protocol to support their immune health over winter. Nothing crazy, just a few baseline supplements to help them stay well, and fight off the winter bugs quickly. There are lots of options for kids of all ages- powders, liquids, chewables. We can put in place the supplements that actually work (so many rubbish supplement available!) and that your kids will actually take. DM for more info or jump online and make a booking with me or one of my team x
