📋💰 NDIS Budget Updates 2026–27

The Federal Government has announced significant NDIS reforms as part of the 2026–27 Commonwealth Budget, with a major focus on improving the long-term sustainability of the Scheme and slowing projected cost growth over the coming years.

The NDIS is currently projected to cost:
📊 $54.1 billion in 2025–26
📊 $56.4 billion in 2026–27

The Government has stated these reforms aim to reduce future projected spending growth, with a target of reducing overall projected costs by billions over the next decade.

Some of the proposed changes include:

🧠 A stronger focus on functional capacity assessments rather than diagnosis alone
📋 Tighter eligibility requirements for new participants
🔄 Potential reviews of existing participant eligibility under updated criteria
👧 Continued investment into foundational supports and early intervention programs such as Thriving Kids
🔐 Increased provider registration and compliance requirements to strengthen quality and oversight

There are also discussions around introducing more structured planning and assessment processes, alongside changes to how support needs are measured across areas such as mobility, communication, self-care, mental health and daily functioning.

While these reforms are intended to improve consistency and long-term sustainability, we understand they may also create uncertainty for participants, families and providers navigating what these changes could mean moving forward.

At Luma Therapy, we’ll continue sharing practical and accessible updates to help our community stay informed, supported and prepared as more information becomes available throughout 2026 🤍

Behaviour Support Plans should be practical, person-centred and easy to follow 🤍

A good plan helps teams and families better understand:
✨ The person’s strengths & goals
✨ What behaviours may be communicating
✨ Triggers & supports
✨ Emotional regulation strategies
✨ Safe and proactive responses

In 2026, there is a growing focus on trauma-informed and evidence-based Behaviour Support that improves quality of life.

At Luma Therapy, we’re passionate about creating supports that are compassionate, collaborative and tailored to the individual.

🐾 Meet Rubble, Luma Therapy’s cutest office visitor! 🤎

Sometimes the best kind of support comes with four paws and a wagging tail. Rubble stopped by the office to say hello and definitely boosted team morale for the day 🐶

🚨 Your NDIS funding may soon be decided differently…

The NDIS is introducing a new assessment tool that will help determine how funding is allocated, and it’s a bit more detailed than before.

This tool looks at both the intensity 📊 and frequency ⏱️ of support needs across 12 key areas of daily life, including mobility, self-care, communication, relationships, behaviour and mental health 🧠

The aim is to build a clearer picture of how people function day-to-day, so supports can be matched more accurately 🎯

For participants, this may mean more structured conversations and a deeper look into different areas of life (not just one part of support).

While the goal is positive, we understand changes like this can feel uncertain.

You don’t have to navigate it alone 🤝

At Luma Therapy, we’re here to help you understand these updates and feel confident moving forward 💛

Behaviour is often the part we see, but it’s rarely the whole story.

Behind behaviours of concern, there is usually something deeper: unmet needs, emotional overwhelm, sensory differences, stress, or difficulty communicating what’s going on internally.

That’s why Positive Behaviour Support isn’t about “fixing” behaviour.

It’s about understanding it.

At Luma Therapy, we take the time to look at the why. We work alongside individuals, families and support teams to build practical, safe and sustainable strategies that support emotional regulation, communication and overall wellbeing.

Because when a person feels understood, supported and safe, EVERYTHING starts to shift.

Small changes in environment, routine, communication or support can make a big difference over time.

If you’re navigating behaviours of concern or looking for more support, we’re here to help 💛
