One of the biggest things we've learnt as Occupational Therapists is this:
Children generally want to succeed.
When toileting is difficult, there is often more happening beneath the surface than we can see. When we understand the reason behind the challenge, we can better support the child.
And that's where meaningful progress begins.

Supporting children through toileting is a team effort.
At Explore & Soar, we offer parent education sessions and professional learning for preschools, schools and early childhood services, helping educators and families better understand the foundations behind toileting, participation and independence.
If your preschool, school or community group would like to host an education session, we'd love to work with you.

Book your education seminar today by completing our online enquiry form through our website https://www.exploreandsoar.com.au/contact-us-2/ or 📞 0477 708 217

It's easy to compare our children with others.
But toilet training isn't a race.
Some children need more time. Some need different strategies. Some need additional support.
Progress doesn't always happen in a straight line, and that's okay. Celebrate every small step forward.
❤️ Progress is still progress.

Some of our favourite strategies include:
🌟Wait until your child is beginning to notice body signals.
🌟Talk through each step when doing it together.
🌟Use visual supports.
🌟Keep routines consistent.
🌟Time toilet breaks for success.
🌟Celebrate progress.
🌟Ask for help if you need it.
Every child is different, so finding the right approach is what matters most.

Before introducing new strategies, spend a few days simply observing.
Notice:
🌟When your child recognises they need the toilet.
🌟What happens before accidents.
🌟What they find easy.
🌟What they find difficult.
The more information you gather, the easier it becomes to choose the right support. Sometimes slowing down is the quickest way forward.

Interoception is our body's internal messenger.
It tells us for example:
🍎 I'm hungry.
💧 I'm thirsty.
😴 I'm tired.
🚽 I need the toilet.
🤕 I feel pain
🥵 I'm hot
🥶 I'm cold
Some children need extra support learning to recognise these signals. Helping children understand what their body is telling them is one of the foundations of successful toileting. Have you noticed if your child can recognise these body signals?

On Wednesday 30 July, Lori had the pleasure of visiting one of our local early education centres to deliver an education session all about 'What is Occupational Therapy?'
Over the 90-minute session, we explored how Occupational Therapists support children to participate confidently in everyday life, whether that's at home, preschool, school or within the community.
What made the session so enjoyable wasn't just the presentation itself, but the wonderful conversations along the way. The educators asked thoughtful questions, shared their own experiences and together we explored practical strategies that can make a meaningful difference for the children they support every day.
We hope everyone walked away with a few new ideas, greater confidence and plenty of those "aha!" moments.

Thank you for welcoming us into your centre and allowing us to share our passion for Occupational Therapy. We feel incredibly privileged to work alongside educators who are so committed to supporting children and their families.

We look forward to seeing you again at our next professional development session!
💚 Together, when families, educators and therapists work together, children thrive.
