Hugo Karen and Sandeli had a great day at Dartmoor Bush Nursing Centre yesterday. Thanks to the staff for looking after us with morning tea. Eye tests at your local Bush Nurse hospital can sometimes find issues before they become big problems.

Sandeli is a University of Melbourne optometry student. This is her rural placement after having done metro placements and a couple of weeks overseas. She has enjoyed Hamilton and Casterton and now has enjoyed the trip to Dartmoor.

Previous student Tish is currently in Nepal and we wish her and everyone in Nepal our best wishes.

Trachoma is a bacterial eye infection that can lead to blindness if left untreated. While it disappeared from most of Australia many decades ago, it persisted in some remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, making Australia the last developed country where trachoma remained endemic.

This year, Australia achieved a major public health milestone when the World Health Organization declared the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem. This success was the result of many years of collaboration between Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, governments, health professionals and local communities, focusing on treatment, facial cleanliness, improved hygiene and better environmental health.

Rotary made an important contribution since 2016 through the Rotary End Trachoma Project, supporting hygiene education, clean face campaigns and hand-washing facilities in remote communities. Working alongside Indigenous-led health services, Rotary volunteers helped raise awareness and improve children's eye health, contributing to the successful elimination of this preventable cause of blindness in Australia.
