🦋 Today is World Eating Disorders Action Day, a moment to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind anyone who is struggling that support is within reach.

Eating disorders affect more than 1 million Australians, of every age, gender, background and body type. They are often invisible from the outside, which is part of why early conversations matter so much. Many people wait far longer than they need to before reaching out, often because of stigma, or a quiet sense that their experience isn't "serious enough" to warrant help.

We want you to know that it is.

If you're noticing changes in your relationship with food, eating, exercise or body image, or you're worried about a friend, family member or partner, your GP is a good place to start. A confidential conversation, a careful assessment, and a referral pathway to the right specialist support when you need it. You don't need a diagnosis, or to be at a crisis point, to come in and talk.

Recovery is possible, and early support makes a real difference.

Food Allergy Week (25–31 May) is a reminder to raise awareness and support people living with food allergies 🥜 🥛 🥚 🐟 🦐 🌾

Food allergy is common in Australia, affecting more than 1.5 million people. Even small amounts of an allergen can trigger a serious reaction.

Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts to certain foods. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:
• Skin reactions such as hives or swelling
• Stomach pain, vomiting or diarrhoea
• Coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing
• In severe cases, anaphylaxis

Simple steps like reading food labels, asking about ingredients, and knowing how to respond to a reaction can make a real difference to safety.

If you or your child has a food allergy, it is important to have an up-to-date allergy action plan and carry prescribed medication at all times.

If you are concerned about possible food allergies or have experienced a reaction, please book an appointment with your GP for assessment and support.

On World Family Doctor Day, we recognise the role family doctors play at the heart of everyday healthcare.

This year's WONCA theme is “Compassionate Care in a Digital World.” It reflects a question every practice is working through right now: how to bring technology into primary care without losing what makes it primary care. The continuity. The trust. The understanding of a patient across years, not just visits.

Family doctors see more than presenting symptoms. They see histories, families, and patterns. That kind of care takes time to build and is worth protecting as the tools around it evolve.

To the 500+ GPs practising in Better Medical clinics across Australia, thank you for your hard work, resilience, and the invaluable care you provide to your patients and local communities every day.

Free RSV vaccines are now available at our clinic under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for:
• Australians aged 75 years and over
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over

Eligible patients can now receive the RSV vaccine Arexvy® free of charge.

RSV is a common respiratory virus that can lead to serious illness, hospitalisation and severe complications in older adults.

Protect yourself this winter by staying up to date with vaccinations.

Today is National Receptionists Day.

We are incredibly proud of our receptionist and administration teams across our network. With 286 admin team members, from Juniors through to Supervisors, each plays an important role in supporting our clinics every day.

They are the first contact our patients have, whether at the front desk or on the phone, and they make all the difference to the patient experience.

To all of our medical receptionists and administration teams, on behalf of your fellow doctors, nurses and Support Office teams, we wholeheartedly thank you for the critical role you play and your ongoing support each day.

Today, we celebrate the incredible contribution of nurses across Australia and around the world.

This year’s theme of “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives” highlights the importance of supporting nurses with safe workplaces, fair recognition, and opportunities to lead. Because when nurses are empowered, patient care improves and communities are stronger.

Nurses make up the largest part of the healthcare workforce, with more than 467,000 nurses in Australia. Across Better Medical, we’re proud to have over 230 nurses caring for patients every day, providing compassionate, skilled, and essential care at every stage of life.

Today is not just about recognition, but action. Addressing workforce shortages and ensuring nurses are supported now and into the future. International Nurses Day is a reminder of the vital role nurses play in keeping our communities healthy.

Regular check-ups with your GP are an important part of staying well. And if something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s worth getting it checked.

On National Asthma Day, we support the Global Initiative for Asthma’s call for access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma.

Asthma affects 260 million people worldwide, and over 450,000 deaths occur annually, most of which are preventable. Inhaled corticosteroids are essential for controlling asthma and preventing attacks, yet many still lack access.

At our clinic we are committed to supporting patients with asthma, ensuring they receive the care they need to manage their condition and live healthy, everyday lives.

Heart Week (4–10 May) is a great time to check in on your heart health ❤️

Many of the factors that affect your heart, like blood pressure and cholesterol, don’t always show obvious symptoms. A Heart Health Check can help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

It’s a simple appointment with the doctor, usually around 20 minutes. You’ll talk through your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, family history, and lifestyle — and leave with a clearer picture of your heart health, along with practical steps to help manage it.

You may be eligible if you are:
▪ Aged 45–79
▪ An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person aged 30 or over

Heart Week is a good reminder to book an appointment and take a proactive step for your health.
