📚 Reading with little ones doesn't always mean reading every word on the page.

In this video, this little one is exploring the book by looking at the pictures, making comments, and sharing what interests them. This is a wonderful example of how books can become an interactive experience rather than simply a story being read from start to finish.

When we follow a child's lead, we create opportunities to:
✨ Build vocabulary
✨ Encourage communication
✨ Develop attention and engagement
✨ Support early literacy skills
✨ Foster imagination and storytelling

Try pausing on a page, talking about the pictures, pointing to interesting objects, and commenting on what your child notices. You might be surprised by how much language and learning can happen when you let them take the lead.

Books are not just for reading they're for exploring, connecting, communicating, and creating stories together. 📚

📚 Literacy starts long before children learn their ABCs. 📚

Many parents are surprised to learn that literacy development begins from birth. Before children can read words on a page, they are building the essential skills that make reading and writing possible later on.

When you talk with your child, sing songs, read stories, play games, and respond to their attempts to communicate, you are strengthening important literacy foundations. These early experiences help children develop vocabulary, listening skills, comprehension, attention, memory, and an understanding of how language works.

Some of the most powerful literacy-building moments happen during everyday activities such as mealtimes, bath time, shopping trips, and bedtime stories in the early years. Every conversation matters. Every story counts. Every interaction is helping your child build the foundations for future learning.

Small moments today create strong readers tomorrow.

📚❄️ June is all about LITERACY! ❄️📚

As the weather gets cooler and we spend a little more time indoors, it’s the perfect opportunity to build literacy skills in fun, meaningful ways.

Literacy is so much more than learning to read and write. It starts with talking, listening, storytelling, playing, singing, and sharing books together. Every conversation, every bedtime story, and every imaginative play adventure helps lay the foundation for future literacy success.

Throughout June, we’ll be sharing tips, activities, milestones, and practical ideas to help support literacy development from toddlers through to school-aged children.

So grab a blanket, curl up with a good book, and join us as we celebrate all things literacy this month! 📖

👧🧒💬 Communication Milestones: 2–3 Years 💬🧒👧
Between 2 and 3 years, children often experience a big burst in communication development, with lots of variation still within typical ranges.
🗣️ Expressive language: 50+ words at 2 years, combining words, and starting short sentences by 3 years
👂 Receptive language: follows 2-step instructions and understands “who/what/where” questions
🎲 Play: more pretend play, early turn-taking, and growing imagination
💡 Every child develops at their own pace—variation is expected and normal.

If you’re ever unsure, early support can help build confidence and communication skills through play

Today is National Simultaneous Storytime! 📚🦘

Today, children across preschools and primary schools around Australia will be reading the wonderful story Luna Roo. This initiative promotes the vital importance of early literacy and shared reading experiences for our little learners.

Reading plays such an important role in developing language skills, vocabulary, listening and comprehension skills, imagination, memory, and empathy. For us speechies, reading together is one of the best ways to support communication development because it helps children learn new words, understand sentence structures, develop storytelling skills, build attention and listening, and create opportunities for meaningful conversations.

Ask your child about Luna Roo this afternoon or evening! Here are some questions you could ask to help prompt conversation and support their language skills:
🦘 Who was your favourite character and why?
📖 What happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story?
💭 How do you think Luna Roo felt during the story?
🌟 What was your favourite part?
🔍 Can you remember any new or interesting words from the book?
🎨 If you could change one part of the story, what would you change?
🗣️ Can you retell the story to someone else in your own words?

Happy reading everyone! 💛
