Play is so much more than fun, it is one of the most powerful ways children learn and develop essential communication skills.

📚 Reading with little ones doesn't always mean reading every word on the page.

In this video, this little one is exploring the book by looking at the pictures, making comments, and sharing what interests them. This is a wonderful example of how books can become an interactive experience rather than simply a story being read from start to finish.

When we follow a child's lead, we create opportunities to:
✨ Build vocabulary
✨ Encourage communication
✨ Develop attention and engagement
✨ Support early literacy skills
✨ Foster imagination and storytelling

Try pausing on a page, talking about the pictures, pointing to interesting objects, and commenting on what your child notices. You might be surprised by how much language and learning can happen when you let them take the lead.

Many parents are surprised to learn that literacy development begins from birth. Before children can read words on a page, they are building the essential skills that make reading and writing possible later on.

When you talk with your child, sing songs, read stories, play games, and respond to their attempts to communicate, you are strengthening important literacy foundations. These early experiences help children develop vocabulary, listening skills, comprehension, attention, memory, and an understanding of how language works.

Some of the most powerful literacy-building moments happen during everyday activities such as mealtimes, bath time, shopping trips, and bedtime stories in the early years. Every conversation matters. Every story counts. Every interaction is helping your child build the foundations for future learning.

As the weather gets cooler and we spend a little more time indoors, it’s the perfect opportunity to build literacy skills in fun, meaningful ways.

Literacy is so much more than learning to read and write. It starts with talking, listening, storytelling, playing, singing, and sharing books together. Every conversation, every bedtime story, and every imaginative play adventure helps lay the foundation for future literacy success.

Throughout June, we’ll be sharing tips, activities, milestones, and practical ideas to help support literacy development from toddlers through to school-aged children.

So grab a blanket, curl up with a good book, and join us as we celebrate all things literacy this month! 📖
