Top tip: when your child is dysregulated, try using fewer words, not more.
A simple co-regulation script might sound like:
“I can see this feels really hard.”
“You’re safe.”
“I’m going to stay nearby.”
“We don’t have to fix it right now.”
When children are overwhelmed, long explanations can feel like more demand. Calm, steady, predictable language can help their nervous system borrow some of your calm. You don’t need perfect words, just a safe person to steady their storm.
