Donor hair is a finite resource. A hair transplant does not create new hair. It moves follicles from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp into areas that are thinning. That donor supply is limited, and it does not replenish. Every graft taken is one that cannot be used later. This is why long-term planning matters more than the graft number.

If hair loss is likely to progress, using most of the donor area in one early procedure can leave very little available for the areas that thin afterwards.

Part of the assessment is estimating how much donor hair is there, and deciding how much of it should be used now and how much should be kept in reserve.

This patient had recession through the frontal hairline, with thinning continuing behind it across the front of the scalp.

A 2000 graft procedure was performed to the frontal area. The grafts were distributed to rebuild the hairline and support the area immediately behind it, working with the hair the patient still had and with the donor supply available.

The hairline was positioned to suit his existing hair pattern and facial proportions, rather than sitting lower or denser than his own hair would support over time.

In the after image the hair is combed back off the face, and shows this patient's individual result at the time of photography.

The first wash after a hair transplant is done carefully and with guidance.

In the early days, the grafts are still settling into the recipient sites, and the scalp is healing.
Washing is not avoided, because keeping the area clean matters, but the technique is gentler and slower than a normal shower.

Patients are shown how to do this before they leave the clinic, and we provide you with the written instructions.

Healing varies between individuals, so follow the advice given by your treating practitioner rather than a general timeline found online.

This is a question Dr Vikram is hearing more often.

Hair shedding has been reported in people using medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, particularly in the setting of significant weight loss. The medication itself may not necessarily be the direct cause. Rapid weight loss, reduced calorie intake and nutritional changes can place stress on the body and trigger a temporary shedding process known as telogen effluvium.

For many people, this type of shedding improves with time. But if there is already underlying pattern hair loss, it is worth having the hair and scalp properly assessed rather than assuming the medication is the only reason.

A hair graft is not the same thing as a single hair.

Each graft is a naturally occurring follicular unit and may contain one, two, three or sometimes more hairs.

During a hair transplant, these grafts are extracted from the donor area, assessed and then placed into the recipient area according to the treatment plan.

Single-hair grafts are often useful around the hairline, while multi-hair grafts may be used where more coverage is needed.

This is why graft count alone does not tell the whole story. The type of grafts available and how they are distributed also matter.

Seeing transplanted hairs shed in the first few weeks can be worrying, but it is a normal part of the process.

After the grafts are moved, some of the visible hairs can shed while the follicles enter a temporary resting phase. The follicles remain in place, and new growth generally starts to become noticeable from around the three-month mark.

Not every transplanted hair follows exactly the same timeline, which is why patience is such a big part of recovery.

It is set up for the kind of work hair restoration requires: careful graft handling, magnification, controlled lighting and a team working closely together for several hours.

For patients, a procedure day can be a long one, so the room is also designed to keep things calm and comfortable while the clinical team works through each stage.

It is not the most glamorous part of hair restoration, but it is where a lot of the detailed work happens.
