Jowls are the fullness or sagging that develops along the lower face and jawline, often becoming more noticeable with age.

They’re caused by a combination of changes within the skin, fat compartments and supporting structures of the face.

As we age, some facial fat compartments can descend or redistribute, while others lose volume. The jowl fat compartment can also become more prominent or enlarged, contributing to fullness around the lower face and a less defined jawline.

At the same time, collagen and elastin decline and the deeper supporting tissues change, allowing the overlying skin and soft tissue to descend.

While jowls are often described as simply “sagging skin”, there’s actually a lot happening beneath the surface.

Understanding why jowls develop is an important part of creating an appropriate, individualised treatment plan.
