Marty Waller's journey is a powerful reminder that a brain injury doesn't have to define what is possible. 💙

For Marty, sailing has provided a sense of purpose and achievement and with the right support and adaptations, he has continued to pursue his passion.

Modifications and adaptive features to his boat funded by the NDIS have helped remove barriers and enabled him to continue sailing competitively.

That determination recently paid off when Marty achieved an incredible milestone, winning the South Australian Sailing Championships as a solo sailor. 🏆

We're proud to share Martin's story and celebrate not only his remarkable achievement, but the journey that made it possible.

Five years on, Damian is still learning about his brain injury journey. 💙

In 2021, Damian experienced a haemorrhagic stroke that changed his life in an instant. He spent two weeks in a coma, 32 days across two hospitals and faced an enormous journey of recovery.

But Damian made a choice: “Will I lay down and die, or will I get up and fight?”

He chose to fight.

Today, Damian continues to focus on growth, determination and finding ways to adapt to his “new normal”. A major part of his recovery has been finding community—and for Damian, that community has been parkrun.

After his stroke, Damian set himself the goal of completing 100 parkruns. He recently reached that milestone, using his achievement not only to celebrate his own journey, but to raise awareness of stroke and brain injury.

Fiona’s life changed dramatically at just 19, when a seizure led to the discovery of a brain tumour. Surgery resulted in a brain injury and significant changes to her mobility and independence.

But Fiona’s journey is a story of determination, adaptation and an ongoing commitment to living life on her own terms.

She returned to university, completed two degrees, became a teacher, travelled overseas, lived independently and continued working hard to maintain her strength and mobility. After further changes to her health meant she began using a wheelchair full-time, Fiona faced another period of significant adjustment.

Today, she continues to focus on the things that matter to her, maintaining her independence, staying socially connected, enjoying sport and spending time with family and friends. She also hopes to use her lived experience to support others living with acquired brain injury.

If there one thing Fiona would like the community to understand it is that all brain injuries are different and regardless of whether an injury is considered severe or mild, we are all human beings and deserve the same dignity, respect and inclusion as everyone else.

In 2013, Shey Webber’s life changed after an accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury.

After having to learn to walk again during rehabilitation, Shey later suffered a spinal cord injury following another fall—meaning she had to start over and learn to walk for a third time.

Today, Shey continues to work towards one of her biggest goals: standing and walking again with her physiotherapist or in the pool.

For Shey, those moments represent more than physical progress. They represent joy, independence and the possibility of doing more for herself.

Shey also speaks about the importance of connection. Her Brain Injury Matters peer support group has become a highlight of her week, giving her the opportunity to connect with people who understand what she's experiencing and help her feel seen and supported.

Her journey is a reminder that progress doesn't always happen quickly, and it doesn't always look the way we expect. Sometimes, it's about taking one small step at a time.
