🚑 What’s in a First Aid Kit? 🩹

Would you know what to reach for in an emergency?

A well-stocked first aid kit can help you manage injuries and illnesses until professional help arrives.

Some essential items include:

• gauze swabs- for cleaning up wounds- should be preference over tissues
• saline- sterile solution used for gently cleaning wounds and removing bacteria
• antiseptic cleaning wipes- perfect for cleaning the area around the wound and preventing infection
• splinter probes- remove splinters or foreign objects from the skin (ensure the area is cleaned properly afterwards)
• non-adherent dressing - to cover a wound without sticking to it (great for all wounds)
• hypoallergenic tape- designed to secure dressings or bandages in place, it minimises the risk of allergic reactions, making it safe for all skin types
• combined pads- thick and highly absorbent- can help with blood wounds and can absorb and manage discharge and come in various sizes
• roller bandage - as they serve multiple purposes, effective for providing support and compression to injured areas, helping minimise swelling and promote proper healing ❤️‍🩹
• triangular bandages- multifunctional, as they can be used to sling an injured arm, bind or dressings. Their shape and size make them versatile for various first aid needs.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, however, every kit should have standard items like wound strips, bandaids 🩹, resuscitation supplies, 🧤 and scissors ✂️. A well equipped first aid kit is crucial for addressing immediate medical needs.

Always ensure your first aid kit is stored properly and replace any used or expired items promptly.

Knowing how to perform CPR on someone in a wheelchair is important because cardiac emergencies don’t wait for ideal conditions—and not everyone can be safely or quickly moved to the ground.

Here’s why it matters:

1. Immediate action saves lives
In cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR reduces survival chances. If someone collapses in a wheelchair and you hesitate because you’re unsure what to do, critical time is lost.

2. Some people can’t be easily moved
Wheelchair users may have conditions like spinal injuries, severe muscle weakness, or fragile bones. Moving them improperly can cause further injury, so knowing how to adapt CPR—or when and how to safely transfer them—is crucial.

3. Inclusive first aid skills
Emergencies can happen to anyone. Being prepared to help people with disabilities ensures first aid is effective and equitable, not just suited to able-bodied individuals.

4. You may need to start CPR in the chair
If you can’t immediately get the person onto a flat surface, you might need to begin chest compressions while they are still in the wheelchair until help arrives or a safer position is possible.

5. Confidence reduces hesitation
People often freeze in emergencies when the situation is unfamiliar. Training for scenarios like wheelchair CPR helps you act quickly and correctly under pressure.

In short, it’s about being prepared to respond quickly, safely, and appropriately, no matter the situation.

The primary survey in first aid is a quick, systematic way to assess a casualty and identify any life-threatening conditions so they can be treated immediately. It follows a structured approach, often remembered as DRSABCD.

Importance of the Primary Survey

* Prioritizes life-threatening issues
It ensures critical problems like blocked airway or stopped breathing are treated first.
* Provides a clear action plan
Prevents panic and helps responders act quickly and logically.
* Improves survival chances
Early CPR and defibrillation significantly increase the chance of survival.
* Reduces further harm
Identifying dangers early protects both the rescuer and the casualty.
* Ensures nothing critical is missed
The structured approach avoids overlooking serious conditions.

❤️ April is autism awareness month so in honour of this we thought we would recognise this.

🧡 Autism is often spoken about using negative words such as ‘disorder’ and ‘difficulty’. Of course it brings with it challenges which differ for each individual but there are also lots of positives to being autistic so thank you for highlighting these.

💛 If you’re a parent advocating for an autistic child in a world created for neurotypical people we know how tough this can be and we see you.
