PRIDE Month is a time to celebrate, but it’s also a time to acknowledge the very real health challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ community. Research shows that eating disorders affect LGBTQIA+ individuals at significantly higher rates, with transgender young people particularly vulnerable.

In this blog, BodyMatters Psychologist Rebecca Jaggard shares clinical insights into the risk and protective factors that influence transgender individuals' relationship with food and body image, alongside the latest research and practical guidance for providing affirming support.

Awareness, affirmation, and access to specialised care can change lives.

When an eating disorder enters a family, it doesn't just affect the person living with it. It reshapes the entire household. Parents carry guilt. Siblings witness frightening moments. Carers stretch themselves to their limits, often without being given the support they need. If this sounds familiar, know that what you're feeling is a completely normal response to an incredibly difficult situation.

This year marks one year since BodyMatters moved into our dedicated Mosman office space, an important step in the continued growth of our multidisciplinary eating disorder service.

What began over 15 years ago with the goal of helping one person recover has continued to grow into a collaborative team supporting children, adolescents, adults and families across Sydney, Canberra, Maitland and Telehealth. Our Mosman office has created more opportunities for connection, integrated care, clinician collaboration and improved access to support for the community.

We are proud of our team and deeply appreciative of everyone who continues to support the work of BodyMatters and eating disorder recovery.

Looksmaxxing is becoming one of the most widely viewed social media trends among young people, especially young men. While it may appear to promote confidence and self-improvement on the surface, many Looksmaxxing communities encourage harmful appearance ideals, hypermasculinity, body dissatisfaction, and extreme behaviours including restrictive dieting, over-exercising, and risky substance use.

Researchers and clinicians are now raising concerns about the impact Looksmaxxing may have on body image, eating behaviours, and mental health in young people. Open conversations and early awareness can help create safer online experiences and stronger self-esteem beyond appearance.
