Hunter Imaging has a long tradition of providing the Hunter region with accurate diagnostic imaging. Hunter Imaging has been in existence in its current form since 1998 following the merger between two long standing Novocastrian diagnostic imaging practices – Hunter Valley Medical Imaging and Newcastle Diagnostic Imaging. These practices go back to the 1920’s and 1930’s respectively and prior to the merger had worked together in 1978 as a joint venture to bring the first CT scanner to Newcastle. From this collaboration it became obvious to both practices that there would be substantial benefits to patients resulting from a more comprehensive and permanent amalgamation. The merger provided Newcastle with a state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging company, with widespread locations all managed and staffed by clinicians with a broad range of expertise. Hunter Imaging now incorporates the specialised imaging services of Hunter Women’s Imaging and the Cardiovascular Centre. The Hunter Women’s Imaging centre is designed to meet the specific needs of women’s health providing a comfortable environment for women to receive top of the line specialist radiological services. The Cardiovascular Centre provides specialist vascular imaging services to the community. In 2001 Hunter Imaging was acquired by Sonic Healthcare which is an international medical diagnostics company, offering extensive pathology and radiology services to various medical communities around the world. Hunter Imaging has been able to further extend its quality of equipment and services in the local region with the corporate backing that Sonic Healthcare provides. It is our belief that every patient deserves to be treated with respect, compassion and care and this remains Hunter Imaging's focus to this day. From our Radiologists, to our Senior Management and clinic staff, there is an unrivalled commitment to patient care that places Hunter Imaging ahead of other providers.

From 1 November 2026, eligible patients can access Medicare-rebated Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scans with a referral from a Nurse Practitioner.

A BMD scan measures bone strength and can help identify osteoporosis and assess fracture risk, supporting earlier diagnosis and management.

All Hunter Imaging locations offering BMD services now accept valid Nurse Practitioner referrals.

Today is World Osteoporosis Day. Osteoporosis is a condition that affects bone density and can increase the risk of fractures.

One of the best ways to assess this risk is a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan. This non-invasive imaging test is used to measure bone density and assess fracture risk.

You may also be referred for pathology testing to investigate factors that can affect bone health.

This October, we're proud to support B***y Movers and the incredible work of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation.

What started as an initiative among Hunter Imaging staff has grown into an annual 100km challenge that raises awareness and much-needed funds for local people impacted by breast cancer.

Over the past five years, Hunter Imaging and its supporters have contributed almost $35,000 to HBCF, helping make a difference close to home.

Every step counts, and we're proud to stand behind this fantastic initiative once again.

September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of cancers affecting the female reproductive system and the importance of early recognition, support and access to care.

Many gynaecological cancers can be hard to detect in their early stages, which is why it's important to be aware of any unusual changes in your body and speak with your doctor if you have concerns.

Medical imaging plays a role in finding, staging and monitoring gynaecological cancers such as ovarian, uterine and cervical tumours. Scans can help doctors plan treatment, check how well it's working and monitor for recurrence.

This Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, Hunter Imaging is proud to help raise awareness and remains committed to providing high-quality diagnostic imaging to support women's health.
