I knew all that drawing with my daughter would pay off. Stayed in the lines and everything.

The Hulk has moved in outside the clinic in West Perth.

He’s big, he’s green, and he’s got better shoulders than me 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Excuse my luminescent legs. Sunglasses recommended 😂😂 it’s a Pilates crowd favourite alert. The hamstring pull through is the one our regulars get around (as opposed to hundreds 😂)

Understandable though. Once you’ve felt what the reformer does for stiff hamstrings and a cranky lower back, you’ll get why. It’s a different kind of flexibility work, and it’s very hard to go back to just stretching after.

We’ve got one or two spots left in Thursday, Friday and Saturday classes, so if you’ve been meaning to try it, get around it.

When your shoulder blade and the muscles close to your spine aren’t doing their share, something else picks up the slack. In pole, that’s usually the wrist and the elbow, gripping harder and loading tissue that was never meant to carry it all. That’s the pattern behind a lot of the tennis and golfer’s elbow we see in pole athletes.

The exercise swimmers build lower trap and posterior chain strength and push up plus trains the serratus anterior, the muscle that glides your shoulder blade around your rib cage. Together they give your shoulder a better base to work from, so your hands aren’t doing a job your back should be doing and shoulders fighting for their life.

Two moves, a few times a week, built up gradually. Your shoulders will thank you come comp prep.

The question we get after this one is always the same. Fine, so what do I do instead?

Load it where it’s the most difficult. The long end of the range is where the work is done to get sustained flexibility and control gains 💪 where that range is is entirely sport dependent.

For pole, that looks like active work in the split rather than sitting in it. Lifting the back leg off the floor. Holding the shape without the ground doing the job for you. Hamstring work with the knee closer to straight instead of everything folded up.

For lifters, it’s the bottom of the RDL, the deep end of a lunge, the stretched position of a curl or a fly. The parts of the rep people rush through because they feel weak there. Feeling weak there is the point.

The distinction that matters clinically: tight and irritated are not the same thing. Something can feel tight because it’s genuinely under strain and asking for help, and stretching it will feel great and not change a whole lot long term.

If you’ve been stretching the same spot for months and it keeps coming back, that’s information you can work with if you know how.

Come in and we’ll work out what’s actually going on.

Curren vibe today. If you walked in today for a shoulder assessment, you may have also been recruited for a quest.

Anyway if your body’s been throwing funky side quests at you lately (dodgy shoulder, cranky lower back, knee that has opinions about stairs), you don’t need a wizard, just a physio.
