I've dug a few of this style saddle and harness bosses over the years, but until recently I haven't really been able to link them to a particular person or property.
There's always been the possibility that they were saddle-maker's badges, or perhaps personalised badges belonging to the owner of the tack.
With some further research into the history of the property where it was found, an interesting possibility has emerged — there's a strong chance this particular boss was associated with prominent early settler Charles Edward Dempster (1839–1907) who leased the property in 1901.

Dempster was a farmer and grazier, an early explorer and a long-serving councillor and chairman of the Toodyay and Northam Road Boards. He also served in the Western Australian Legislative Council, representing Toodyay and later the East Province.
If the connection is correct, this little piece of horse tack could have belonged to a man who played a significant role in the early european history of the region.

It's amazing how a small piece of metal pulled from the ground can open the door to a much bigger story. There's still more research to do, but this one is looking like a very historical find. 🔎🐎

Join the Northam Army Camp Heritage Association Inc., next Saturday, at the historic Northam Army Camp for a powerful day of storytelling, reflection, and shared heritage. This unique event brings to life the experiences of displaced persons and migrants who first arrived in Australia carrying the legacies of war, forced labour and displacement.

Through personal narratives, historical insights and discussion. The children of these survivors reclaim and share stories that shaped their families and this significant site.

Set on ground layered with military, POW, migrant, and contemporary histories The event explores themes of memory, belonging, and identity. Presentations from historians, researchers and community voices are complemented by interactive sessions, panel discussions, and a heritage trail, offering multiple ways to engage with the past.

Open to all, the day invites reflection on how these stories continue to shape our communities.

Location: Northam Army Camp, Great Eastern Hwy
Date: Saturday, 22 August 2026 from 10am to 3pm
There will be a coffee van and sausage sizzle by the Army Cadets. All other food and drink is BYO (no alcohol).

Registrations are essential and photo ID required to enter the Northam Army Camp.

This was a wonderful event & it was good to see the Boya Community Centre in Helena Valley. What a fantastic venue it would make for a funeral service, just down the hill, all the facilities in a beautiful setting.

We were delighted to see so many people join us on Sunday for our Dying to Know Expo.

The event provided opportunities to connect with experts, discover available services, and gain the confidence to make informed choices as part of a national campaign encouraging Australians to open up meaningful conversations about death, dying and grief.

Attendees listened to a diverse range of speaker sessions and explored the exhibition area which offered conversations with a local artist painting a cardboard casket, vintage and Harley Davidson hearses, a performance from a musician and a variety of exhibitors from end-of-life services.

Thank you to all the presenters and exhibitors who donated their time. Special thanks to Master of Ceremonies Julie Carlton Celebration of Life Celebrant and Paige McNeil President Shire of Mundaring for opening the expo.

The Chamber Business After Hours - Sundowner at Eclipse Brewery was attended by many yesterday. It was wonderful to hear their journey to finally having their brewery producing & open to the public. Eclipse commitment to using all WA products/produce is fantastic. Well done guys 👏👏👏👏
