📺🛋️ Is Your Favourite Couch Position Affecting Your Body?
We all have a favourite position when relaxing on the couch, perhaps leaning your elbow against the armrest while watching TV, with one leg crossed over the other.
It feels comfortable at the time, but what happens when your body stays in this position for a long period?
When you lean to one side, your upper body can become uneven, while crossing one leg over the other can create rotation through the pelvis and hips.
This may result in an asymmetrical position through the:
• Neck and shoulders
• Spine
• Pelvis
• Hips
• Legs
Your body constantly works to keep you balanced. When you regularly sit in the same uneven position for long periods, some muscles may become overworked or tight while others may become less active.
Over time, this can contribute to:
🔹 Muscle tightness and stiffness
🔹 Reduced range of motion
🔹 Neck, shoulder or lower-back discomfort
🔹 Hip and pelvic tension
🔹 Changes in movement patterns
🔹 Muscle imbalance
⚖️ Does this mean crossing your legs or leaning on the armrest is bad?
Not necessarily.
The problem is more likely to come from staying in the same position for too long and repeating the same posture every day.
Your body is designed to move. Rather than trying to maintain a “perfect posture” all the time, try to create more movement and variety throughout your day.
💡 Try this next time you watch TV:
✅ Change your sitting position regularly
✅ Uncross your legs from time to time
✅ Sit with your feet supported when possible
✅ Avoid always leaning to the same side
✅ Get up and move around during longer TV sessions
Small changes in your everyday habits can help your body move more comfortably.
