Client Spotlight - Hugh🏆

Celebrating Lifelong Contribution!

2026, celebrating 35 years of West Australian Association of Teacher Associations (WAATA).

With sincere appreciation and gratitude; Hugh was recently awarded recognition of planting the seeds to create the West Australian Association of Teacher Assistants so that Educators could be seen, heard and valued for their contribution to Education.

Throughout his career, Hugh worked as a teacher in Geraldton and at John Curtin, taught at Grayland's Teachers’ College, and later lectured at Curtin University and Edith Cowan University. He retired at the age of 60. Before COVID-19, he also taught a course on Shakespeare at the Kalamunda Learning Centre.

Even in later life, Hugh’s love and dedication to education and to the next generation remain boundless. He is now living with Alzheimer’s disease and navigating its challenges.

A true reflection on how Older adults deserve recognition for the valuable contributions they have made throughout their working lives. Their knowledge, commitment and experience have helped educate others, strengthen communities and create opportunities for future generations. Celebrating their past careers reminds us that their influence continues long after retirement, and that every person’s dedication can leave a meaningful and lasting legacy.

From the very beginning of her career as a caregiver with Dovida Perth North East, formerly known as Home Instead, Jennie has demonstrated confidence, compassion and commitment.

Sometimes, it's as simple as a fresh spring day, a nice drink and good company. Last week we had a gathering at Avocados in Kelmscott and celebrated the arrival of spring.

Companionship services provide meaningful social connection and support, helping ageing adults feel less isolated and more connected to their community. Whether it’s enjoying a cuppa, going for a walk, attending an appointment or simply having a friendly chat, companionship can bring joy, confidence and a greater sense of independence to everyday life.

Upcoming changes to personal care funding!🛁👚

From 1 October 2026, personal care services are moving from the Independence category to the Clinical Supports category under the Support at Home program.

This means personal care, including showering, dressing, continence support, eating assistance and help with medication, will become fully funded by the Australian Government.

What this means for you as a Support at Home Participant?
If personal care is included in your support plan and you have funding available, any contributions you currently pay towards personal care services will no longer apply from 1 October 2026 onwards.

A few things worth knowing:
- Services delivered before 1 October 2026 will still carry the usual contribution, even if invoiced afterwards.
- Your care and your caregivers stay the same, this is a change to funding categories only, not to how your care is delivered.
- Contributions for everyday living services like domestic assistance and gardening remain unchanged.

If you have any questions about how this applies to your budget, your care coordinator is always happy to help.
