A small peek into a family’s home-birth story

The family dog waiting in the birth space and then having cuddles by the pool in the waves of labour

A couple of hours later a new mum who has realised her power, a dad holding both his partner and new baby in awe

Baby’s tiny toes poking out of the warm water held by the hands that will guide her through life. In the same photo the bracelet on mums wrist from the red thread ceremony where her sisterhood laid their intention to be by her side in spirit as she faced her journey

A new dad cuddling his baby skin to skin whilst mum had a moment to catch her breath and reflect

Lastly tucked up with baby on the lounge just being in the moment

Thank you to this family for sharing a small piece of your birth story

There are a number of different approaches to the birth of the placenta.

Some women birth their placenta naturally.

Some have their placental birth medically managed.

There are pros and cons to each option.

If you have certain other types of intervention, such as induction or augmentation of labour, your options may be more limited, but you still have choices.

To answer a question that we get asked by many women: your placenta belongs to you.

It is always a good idea to get informed before you decide what's right for you.

Another option for separating the baby and the placenta after birth is cord burning… a little ceremony in itself. In Chinese medicine it is believed that this method slowly transfers the placentas vital essence and warming yang energy directly into the newborn ensuring a peaceful transition into the world

This picture is kindly shared from a recent home birth. It captures the mum, dad, midwife and friends hands as we all just held space honouring the connection baby had with the placenta and intentionally marking the transition of this beautiful baby boy from womb to the outside world. Seemed very fitting especially as he was also born in the year of the fire horse 🔥

Today on Mother’s Day I reflect on how blessed I am not only as a mum and grandmother (Dabby) but also to have a role as a midwife where I get to witness the makings of a mother time and time again 🙏🏻

Holding space as women navigate this new space whether it be for the first time or as they expand a little more for their next babies ✨

Always big emotions alongside the sheer exhaustion of those early days, happiness, sadness, questioning if they are ‘doing it right’ or ‘are enough’. Slowly finding a pattern of what feels right, loving these new beings with all of your heart but also at times feeling a bit lost in the big life changes that come with the change from maiden to mother or the expansion of the mother you already were

Remember to be gentle on yourself and regardless of the pressure to be a ‘good’ mum to always take time to soak it all in ❤️ breathe in those baby smells and as you do remind yourself that you are enough, you are your baby’s whole world

Happy Mother’s Day
