My biggest struggle with death and dying….

This is Molly.

She is 14 years old.

She has arthritis in her back legs.

She has a few lumps.

On a recent vet visit we talked about her health and ongoing care. Did we want to do biopsies for her lumps. They are probably nothing to worry about. Lipomas, fatty tissue.

I sat there in the vets office for a minute, thinking. Do I want to put my sweet girl through more anaesthetic, time in a crate away from us, needles, poking and prodding.

I decided not to do any exploratory procedures. She is happy, we know how to manage her allergies, she has a happy life and she is very loved.

It got me thinking, when do you stop exploring options and/or treatment and just let your pet live their best life.

This is the one area of death and dying I struggle with the most. The death of my beloved dogs. I know one day it will come. But until then, I want Molly to live in peace and comfort. It’s what she deserves.

Behind every ceremony is a quiet process most people never see.

Days before the funeral, I’m sitting with your family. Listening to stories, writing them down, shaping them into something worthy of the person being remembered.

We talk about the music that will play, the structure, the rituals, the moments you’ll want to remember.

On the day itself, I hold the space.

I make sure the ceremony flows, there is room for all emotions, grief is witnessed, everyone in the space feels seen including those who are struggling to hold it together (note: you don’t have to hold it together).

That’s my role as a celebrant. It’s not just saying the words. It’s carrying the words that start the healing process.
