Many NDIS participants and families are currently experiencing changes to their plans, including reduced funding, shorter plan durations, and requests for additional evidence.

While these changes can feel overwhelming, there are steps you can take to prepare and protect your rights.

⚠️ Important Community Notice – National AusAlert Test

On Monday 27 July 2026 at 2:00 pm AEST, the Australian Government will conduct a national test of AusAlert, Australia’s new emergency warning system.

A loud alert and vibration will be sent to most compatible mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches and other connected devices. This is only a test, and no action is required.

The sudden, loud sound and vibration may also be distressing for people who are noise sensitive or have sensory processing differences. Where possible, provide advance warning and consider having headphones or a trusted support person available.

While this will be a brief interruption for most people, it may create a serious safety risk for anyone who keeps a hidden phone or device as part of a family violence safety plan.

For safety, hidden devices should be completely switched off before 2:00 pm or placed in aeroplane mode with Wi-Fi turned off. Devices should remain off or in aeroplane mode for 24 hours after the test. Remember to also consider older phones, spare tablets and smartwatches.

Please share this information thoughtfully—it may help someone feel prepared or stay safe. 💙

For further guidance, visit ausalert.gov.au.
Support is available through 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 and Safe Steps Victoria on 1800 015 188. In an emergency, call 000.

Circle of Security is a model that supports parents to be secure attachment figures to their children. Parenting Neurodivergent children can be challenging, with heightened emotions, harder to read needs, different ways to communicate and sometimes intense interactions.

As much as parents feel the need to, the role is not to do everything, explain everything, to control everything, but to be a calm presence, that supports the child to process what emotions they are feeling, challenges they are navigating in a way that builds a sense of safety, decreases fear and builds self esteem.

At Flying Start, we run Circle of Security - Parenting in it's pure form, however the space is a supportive one where parents can talk about the challenges of being a secure attachment figure to children with big needs, big emotions and big challenges.

We would love you to join us for our next group, run in the evenings. A time where hopefully there are less competing demands!

And you can tune in from anywhere Australia wide!

Register today to book a spot. Starting Monday August 3rd at 7:30pm for 7 consecutive weeks.

The best therapy format can change depending on the child’s needs, family priorities, goals, and what feels most helpful at the time.

Sometimes therapy is 1:1 with the child, sometimes it includes parents or caregivers in the room, sometimes it happens in a group, and sometimes the most helpful option is a parent consult or coaching session.

Each approach has different benefits, and the “best fit” depends on a range of factors.

At Flying Start, we aim to make therapy practical, playful, and meaningful, while helping families understand how to carry strategies into everyday life.

Please chat with your therapist if you’d like to explore which therapy format might be the best fit for your child.

Deakin University School of Health and Social Development | Placement Expo 2026

It was wonderful to talk to so many future Allied Health professionals and hear how excited they are about placement learning opportunities.

At Flying Start we host a number of student placements throughout the year, and understand the importance of supporting the development of knowledge and invaluable first-hand experience needed to make great therapists in the future.

Sarah, one of our Senior Occupational Therapists, was out and about last week working with a community organisation of therapists. She received great feedback from her presentation discussing the nuances, myths and evidence around working with Autistic family members in therapy settings.

At Flying Start we emphasise the importance of sharing evidence based information, and can tailor professional development to meet the individual needs of any organisation. Please reach out to Sarah if you think your workplace would benefit from involvement from a therapist in any capacity ([email protected]).
