Sometimes creativity asks us to let go of rules and simply follow joy.

This altered bottle began as a simple surface to decorate, but with each layer it became a reminder that art doesn't always need to be restrained or perfectly balanced. Sometimes it can be playful, colourful, textured, and wonderfully over-the-top.

Flowers, tassels, braids, trims, sparkle, and a little unicorn magic all found their place here.

The more I worked on it, the more I realised that creativity isn't always about knowing when to stop. Sometimes it's about allowing yourself permission to explore what happens next.

Create boldly. Create curiously. Create without apology.

🌿 Exploring Handmade Art Journals at X Factor Abilities in Springwood, QLD 🌿

What happens when a journal becomes a piece of art itself?

Over the coming weeks, participants in our Creative Connections workshops will be exploring the process of creating their own mixed media art journals from scratch.

Unlike traditional spiral-bound journals, these handcrafted journals are designed to allow for full double-page spreads, giving participants the freedom to create artwork that flows seamlessly across both pages without interruption.

Each journal contains five removable signatures, allowing pages to be removed while participants work on their mixed media creations and then returned to the journal once complete. This provides greater flexibility for painting, collage, mark making, stamping, journalling, and creative experimentation.

Participants will have the opportunity to create journals in a range of sizes:
📖 A4 Journal – ideal for larger mixed media pieces and expressive artwork
📖 A5 Journal – a versatile everyday creative journal
📖 Half A5 Journal – a compact size perfect for creative reflections, visual journalling, and inspiration on the go

No two journals will ever be the same.

From fabric and decorative papers to paint, collage elements, embellishments and personal touches, each journal becomes a reflection of the creator's story, interests and imagination.

Have you ever wondered what happens inside The Canvas during our Creative Connections workshops?

This afternoon between **1:00 pm and 3:30 pm**, X Factor Abilities is opening the doors for a casual drop-in visit.

Participants, Support Workers, Support Coordinators, family members, and those interested in learning more about our Creative Connections Program are welcome to stop by, say hello, and observe the creative activities taking place.

🎨 DUTCH POUR PAINTING AT THE CANVAS in SPRINGWOOD 🎨

One of the most exciting parts of Dutch Pour painting is watching how each artwork develops its own personality.

Although participants followed the same technique, each painting took a completely different journey. Colours flowed, stretched, emerged, and transformed in ways that could never have been fully predicted. What began as a shared activity became a collection of unique and individual artworks.

Louise's painting (consent had been provided previously in writing and verbally provided today, permitting the sharing of her creative journey), was particularly beautiful to watch evolve. Early in the process, colours began emerging from beneath the black pillow of paint in a shape resembling the iris of an eye. As the paint continued to move and respond to the airflow, the artwork transformed again, developing into the soft, flowing composition seen here.

The process encouraged creativity, problem-solving, decision-making, and learning to embrace the unexpected. Participants explored colour choices, paint consistency, airflow techniques, and composition while experiencing the joy of watching their artwork unfold before them.

At X Factor Abilities within our Creative Connections workshops, we celebrate the fact that there is no single "right" outcome. Creativity allows participants to experiment, take risks, learn from the process, and discover that sometimes the most beautiful results are the ones we never planned.

We loved watching each painting develop and can't wait to see what participants create next. 💚✨

This week at The Canvas in Springwood we made a resin bathroom decor set: a soap pump, bathtub soap holder and a trinket dish.

I have been exploring collage more in my art journal, loving every part of the creative process along the way.

Join us for Creative workshops at The Canvas in Springwood, Qld! 🌟I am absolutely in love with this colorful A3 collage poster, made entirely from copies of my gelli plate prints!

🎨 However, looking closely at it, I feel there is still more to do before it feels completely finished.To explore next steps, I am making a smaller version for my art journal—the very same journal all participants receive when they start their Creative workshop journey with us at X Factor Abilities!

I plan to add abstract art elements to the journal piece, which I think will give me the exact inspiration needed to make the large A3 collage poster feel complete.

As it is a rainy day here in Springwood and plans for the morning have changed, I am going to be crafting away here at The Canvas: a crafter’s workshop delight and where you too can create your masterpiece of craft and art.

Our latest creative masterpieces are pictured here, as I trialed the Kinusaiga art of seamless quilting. My goal with this form of craft is to introduce the use of materials that is taken from discarded garments and clothing’s, thereby repurposing clothing and fabrics in a sustainable way.

Giving new life to old, discarded items is another venture we will be looking at here at X Factor Abilities.

Our Creative Workshops at The Canvas in Springwood has capacity in various workshops available across Wednesdays, Thursdays and every second Friday.

There comes a point in some creative projects where you realise the piece is technically “done”… but emotionally unfinished.

This mixed media portrait was one of those pieces.

Over the past week, I kept returning to it, feeling drawn to soften the structured background and “mess it up” slightly — adding texture, depth, distressing, and layered imperfections. What began as a clean decorative piece slowly transformed into something that felt more alive, expressive, and emotionally connected.

Sometimes art mirrors life:
healing is not linear, identity is layered, and beauty can exist alongside the darker textures of our experiences.

This week’s Creative Workshops continue exploring identity, self-expression, and creative freedom through mixed media, texture, layering, and storytelling through art.

✨ There is no “perfect” in art here — only exploration, expression, and discovering what feels right for you.

Participants receive an Art Journal they can decorate with mixed mediums, collage, decoupage, drawing and acrylic in painting in any spare time after their main project is completed. If you are needing a space where you can immerse yourself in creative exploration, reach out today.
