Over a decade ago, I had two best friends.
The three of us came from very different backgrounds, and we met at a time in our lives when things were uncertain and displaced. Yet somehow, the universe brought the three of us together.
Those who knew us back then knew just how unbreakable our bond was.
In fact, we all somehow ended up receiving the exact same necklace one Christmas. 😳
Looking back now, I can’t help but think about how uncanny it was that all three of us were gifted the infinity symbol.
We wore those necklaces as a symbol of our friendship — a reminder that what we shared would last forever.
My birthday is the 12th of September.
It is also the date I lost my dear friend Chloe in 2013.
For many years, my birthday carried a bittersweet feeling (still does). There was happiness in celebrating another year of my life, but alongside it was the painful reminder that one of my best friends was no longer here to celebrate it with me.
For years, I blamed myself. I felt angry. I felt hurt. And I struggled deeply with the reality that life continues even when someone we love is no longer here.
But with time, I’ve come to understand something:
Some friendships never end.
Even when someone is no longer physically here, the love, memories and impact they leave behind can remain with us.
Every year, my birthday reminds me of Chloe — a friend whose heart shone like gold and whose spirit seemed wise far beyond her years.
Chloe cared deeply about the people around her. Even while carrying her own struggles, she had a way of being a beacon of light to others.
She reminded me that good people really do exist. That kindness matters. That love matters. And that sometimes, the smallest act of compassion can mean more to someone than we will ever know.
I wish she could have known just how much she meant to the people who loved her.
And perhaps that is why, all these years later, I still speak about her.
Because she mattered.
Our friendship mattered.
And I will always carry a piece of those memories with me.
Some friendships truly never end.
Even in death.
I have so much more I could say, but I’ll leave this here for now
We love and miss you Chloe Elizabeth
