Born here at our hospital and now supporting our primary and community health teams. Well done Karen! 💛

Serving the community that raised her is what drives Karen's work every day.

“I am one of seven and was born in Fairfield Hospital and raised in Minto. I’ve lived in south western Sydney my entire life, and worked here most of it,” said Karen, Director of Finance and Corporate for Primary and Community Health.

Starting out in accounting, Karen has built her career across both the private sector and public health, and says the relationships she’s built along the way have been key to her growth.

“It’s a privilege working in the District that raised me. Our staff are so passionate about making a difference, and I love supporting our teams.”

Karen says her journey has been shaped by the support of those around her. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without my family, mentors and the many people who have guided me.”

Her advice for those starting out is simple: Take every bit of advice people share, ask questions, learn everything you can, and jump at every opportunity. There are so many ways you can make a difference here.

Sadly one in five men in NSW will get prostate cancer by age 85, but having the right information can help.

Many prostate cancers do not cause symptoms in the early stages, but there are some symptoms to look out for:

- Problems passing urine
- Having to pass urine more often
- Not being able to wait to go to the bathroom
- Pain or burning when passing urine
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Pain in the lower back or hips
- Tiredness, shortness of breath, weight loss or dizziness

Speak with a GP about any symptoms or concerns.
