Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) bid farewell to the 17th China Medical Team on 16 June 2026 in Gaborone.
The team comprising doctors, nurses, and administrators completed a two-year term of service in Botswana after arriving in 2024. During their tenure at PMH, they contributed significantly to patient care, clinical training, and hospital operations.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Tshepo Machacha, the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, expressed his gratitude to the Peopleโs Republic of China for supporting Botswana with specialist medical teams and nurses since 1981. He noted that the China Medical Teams โdid not just come to see patients; they also imparted valuable knowledge.โ
Dr. Luo Jinying, the Team Leader of the 17th China Medical Team (Gaborone Branch), expressed sincere appreciation to the Botswana government for its trust and support. โI would also like to pay tribute to our local colleagues who have worked alongside us, and extend my heartfelt thanks to every team member for their dedication, hard work, and selfless service,โ she said. She added that the team carried out their duties with unwavering dedication despite challenges such as environmental differences, language barriers, and demanding workloads.
Mr. Lan Yuqiang, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor from the Chinese Embassy in Botswana, expressed profound gratitude to the Botswana government for providing unwavering logistical support. He highlighted that the spirit of the Chinese Medical Team perfectly summarizes their mission: โDefying hardship, willingness to dedicate, healing the wounded, rescuing the dying, and possessing boundless love.โ He added that the Peopleโs Republic of China stands ready to deepen the medical partnership and continue writing this chapter of a shared future together.
In his closing remarks, Acting Hospital Superintendent Dr. Mosimanegape Nkwane thanked the Peopleโs Republic of China for its steadfast support in providing medical care to residents. He noted that he looks forward to working seamlessly with the incoming team next month.
Hospital management expressed deep appreciation for the teamโs dedication, expertise, and the strong partnership between the Peopleโs Republic of China and Botswanaโs Ministry of Health. This ongoing support has strengthened service delivery at PMH and left a lasting impact on both staff and patients.
