June is migraine awareness month. Migraines are a complex neurological condition that affects an estimated 5 million Canadians and is one of the most common diseases worldwide. Symptoms can include intense head pain, nausea, dizziness, and sensitivity to light, sound, and smells, often making everyday activities difficult.

Good news is migraine management isn't one-size-fits-all. Identifying triggers, tracking symptoms, optimizing nutrition, improving sleep, managing stress, and finding the right treatment plan can all play a role in reducing migraine frequency and severity.

Naturopathic medicine takes an individualized approach, helping to uncover potential root causes and develop personalized strategies to support long-term migraine management.

Looking for a light, floral drink to enjoy this summer? Try this apple elderflower and mint sparkle.

Elderflower isn’t just delicious, it has a long history of traditional use and contains naturally occurring plant compounds that may support overall wellness.

Elderflower (Sambucus nigra) is rich in bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and triterpenes, which contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests these compounds may help protect cells from oxidative stress and support the body’s natural inflammatory response.

Traditionally, elderflower has been used to support:
Cold and flu symptoms
Sinus and respiratory health
Digestion and circulation
Natural sweating and detoxification processes
Overall immune support

Studies have also found that elderflower contains high levels of antioxidants, including flavonoids like quercetin and rutin, which may help support long-term health.

Always consult a healthcare practitioner if you have questions about using herbal remedies.

Feeling constantly exhausted, dizzy, foggy, or just not like yourself? It might not be "just stress." Low energy can have many causes, including declining NAD+ levels or iron deficiency.

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) is a vital coenzyme involved in energy production (ATP through cellular metabolism) and cellular stress resistance & oxidative balance. When NAD+ levels decline, it may contribute to fatigue, low energy, brain fog and lower metabolism.

Iron deficiency can also significantly impact energy and overall well-being. Common symptoms include extreme fatigue, weakness and shortness of breath or rapid heartbeat.

Symptoms like fatigue and brain fog can have many different causes, so it's important to identify the root cause rather than simply treating the symptoms. NAD+ and IV iron therapy are not suitable for everyone, so consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner is essential to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your individual needs.

More than just a refreshing flavour, spearmint is a herb commonly used in naturopathic medicine for its potential benefits on digestion, hormonal health, inflammation, and overall wellness.

Spearmint contains plant compounds and antioxidants like rosmarinic acid and flavonoids, which may help protect the body from oxidative stress and inflammation. Research has also explored spearmint’s potential role in supporting cognitive function, stress management, and hormone balance.

Potential benefits of spearmint may include:
• Digestive support & bloating relief
• Hormonal support, especially for women with PCOS
• Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
• Stress and relaxation support
• Mental clarity & cognitive support
• Nausea relief
• Fresh breath & oral health support

Spearmint tea is naturally caffeine-free and can be enjoyed hot or iced as part of a calming daily wellness routine. Some studies suggest that spearmint tea may help reduce excess androgen levels like testosterone in women with PMOS (formerly known as PCOS).

As always, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional to determine what’s best for your individual needs.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

Did you know that skin cancer is one of the most common cancers, but also one of the most preventable? In fact, about 65% of melanoma cases are linked to UV exposure. Early detection and sun safety can make a huge difference.

Here are some important ways to protect your skin:
• Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily.
• Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors.
• Seek shade, especially between 11am–3pm (high UV hours of the day).
• Wear sunglasses, hats, and protective clothing.
• Avoid tanning beds, there is no such thing as a “safe tan”.
• Check your skin regularly for any new or changing spots or moles.

Skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age or skin tone. That’s why awareness, prevention, and routine skin checks are so important. Most skin cancers are treatable when caught early.
