Did you know that Canada's health care system is responsible for 4.6% of our country’s greenhouse gas emissions as well as more than 200 000 tons of other pollutants - making it one of the worst per capita health care polluters in the world? (Source: Canadian Medical Association Journal, ‘Canada’s health system is among the least green’, Lauren Vogel) Education around environmental issues for clinics/health facilities, providers and patients will be foundational in creating a more sustainable future.

This , we encourage health care initiatives that positively impact our environment - like the recent Earth to Action pilot, led by resident doctor Yseult Gibert, to reduce our clinic’s carbon footprint through optimized inhaler prescriptions.

Spring means flower buds and blooming trees - and if you're one of the millions of people who have seasonal allergies, it also means sneezing, congestion, a runny nose and other bothersome symptoms. Our CVFP Team recommends you try these simple strategies to keep seasonal allergies under control:
1. Reduce your exposure to allergy triggers - for example, keep windows closed during high-pollen days
2. Take extra steps when pollen counts are high - usually during hot or windy spells
3. Keep indoor air clean - use HEPA air filters and shower after being outdoors
4. Wear sunglasses and consider a mask during high pollen days
5. Try an over-the-counter remedy
6. Rinse your sinuses

If these strategies don’t bring you relief, connect with your CVFP health provider for support.

"We have to stop doing things the same way expecting different results," says Dr. Braden Manns. Dr. Manns is the Svare Professor in Health Economics at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine, with expertise in Applied Health Economics.

One in 5 adults in Canada don't have a regular health care provider, usually a family doctor. Overcrowded hospital ERs are just one significant consequence of this. It's time for a bold approach. Two years ago, CVFP launched a pilot program where patients see RNs and other healthcare professionals more often than family doctors to ensure the right care at the right time. We are proud of our work as innovators in primary care. We hope our team-based care approach continues to be studied and talked about, and that real change follows. You need a team! Teams of clinicians – not just family docs – are the future of primary care. Why don't most Canadians have one? Check out this new report on how doctors’ roles need to evolve, as does the way we pay them. https://lnkd.in/gB3a8jYa | 11 comments on LinkedIn

According to the Alberta College of Family Physicians, family doctors are the foundation of an ever-changing and overburdened health system, providing 70 percent of health care in Alberta. It’s more important than ever to show our support for family doctors and to recognize their impact on patients, families and communities across our province.

As the May long weekend and summer days approach, our CVFP Health Team is focussed on highlighting the importance of sun protection and early skin cancer detection.

With skin cancer rates continuing to rise, and limited access to dermatologists due to long wait times and provider shortages, it’s more important than ever to take preventive action. Practicing sun safety - especially during the summer months when UV exposure is at its peak - is essential in reducing the risk of skin cancer. Visit https://dermatology.ca/public-patients/sun-protection/sun-safety-every-day/ for sun safety tips.
