Dementia develops when the risk factors for the disease combine and reach a level that overwhelms the brain’s ability to maintain and repair itself. Reducing as many of the risk factors as you can makes good sense.

Some risk factors you can’t control, like your genetic makeup and growing older, but there is a lot you can do that may help reduce your risk of dementia.

The CVFP ‘My Brain Health Checklist’ is a tool to guide patients towards brain-healthy goals. You can download it at cvfp.com, Patients, Health Resources.

Starting next year, women aged 40-44 will no longer require a referral from a healthcare provider for access to screening mammograms in Alberta.

Currently, women aged 45-74 can self-refer to a radiology clinic of their choice for regular screening mammograms. Women aged 40-44 are also eligible following an initial, one-time referral from their healthcare provider. The change, which comes into effect on April 1, 2027, eliminates the one-time referral for women aged 40-44. For more information, visit https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=96045207EF3DF-EC0E-449B-B65155B21DC51670

Our CVFP Health Team encourages you to talk to your provider if you have questions about the benefits and potential harms of breast cancer screening.

Have you experienced strong cravings for food after a bad night’s sleep? Stanford researchers discovered that sleep deprivation can disrupt the balance of two key appetite hormones; ghrelin which drives hunger and leptin which signals fullness. In their study, short sleep was linked to lower leptin, higher ghrelin and higher self-reported hunger. (Source: Stanford University School of Medicine researchers, ‘Short Sleep Duration Is Associated with Reduced Leptin, Elevated Ghrelin, and Increased Body Mass Index’, Public Library of Science). What this means is that the body is sending a stronger ‘eat signal’ and a weaker ‘I’m full signal’ – a challenging combination for best weight management.

Our CVFP Health Team recommends 7-8 hours of sleep every night for optimal health. If you are experiencing sleep challenges, contact your health team.
