P4 of the Logic Trap Series: “I hear fine in quiet”
Many people use quiet environments as the main reference point for how well they hear. In these settings, everything can feel normal, which often reinforces the belief that no changes are present.
However, hearing challenges are often first noticed in more complex listening environments, where background noise, distance and multiple speakers make it harder to follow conversation.
Over time, some individuals may also begin to adjust their behaviour without fully realizing it, such as choosing quieter spaces or relying more on context to fill in gaps.
This is where hearing can feel “fine” in certain situations, while still becoming more effortful in others.
A changing benchmark can be difficult to notice on your own. Over time, what feels normal can shift without you realizing it.
