P4 of the Logic Trap Series: “I hear fine in quiet”

Many people use quiet environments as the main reference point for how well they hear. In these settings, everything can feel normal, which often reinforces the belief that no changes are present.

However, hearing challenges are often first noticed in more complex listening environments, where background noise, distance and multiple speakers make it harder to follow conversation.

Over time, some individuals may also begin to adjust their behaviour without fully realizing it, such as choosing quieter spaces or relying more on context to fill in gaps.

This is where hearing can feel “fine” in certain situations, while still becoming more effortful in others.

A changing benchmark can be difficult to notice on your own. Over time, what feels normal can shift without you realizing it.

P3 of the Logic Trap Series: “People just mumble.”

This is one of the most common explanations people land on when conversations start feeling harder to follow.

But what often gets missed is that speech clarity is not just about how others are speaking. It is also about how sound is being processed, especially in background noise, group settings or over time.

When understanding starts to require more effort, it is easy to assume everyone around you has changed.

Sometimes the more helpful question is not whether people are mumbling, but what has changed in how clearly things are being heard.

Send this to someone who could benefit from this information!

The challenge with waiting until hearing difficulties feel “serious enough” is that hearing changes often happen gradually.

Many people adapt over the years, which can span decades, without realizing how much extra effort conversations, social settings and everyday listening have started to require. The brain is powerful enough to adapt to the circumstance of reduced hearing and you'll automatically adopt behaviours to assist in "hearing better."

What once felt “not bad enough” can slowly become years of normalized frustration, fatigue or disconnection before someone realizes how much has changed.

Awareness does not have to start when things feel severe. Your hearing ability is part of your healthcare too... don't lose something that permanently goes away instead of trying to protect it BEFORE it gets bad.

Start with the baby step of taking our online hearing test and get more insight on how your hearing is actually doing.

“It’s not bad enough yet.”

This is one of the most common things people tell themselves when it comes to hearing.

Because hearing changes often happen gradually, many people adapt without realizing how much extra effort they are putting into conversations, social settings and everyday listening.

Waiting until things feel “bad enough” can also mean spending years normalizing frustration, fatigue or disconnection that does not have to feel normal.

Sometimes awareness starts with simply paying attention to what has changed.
