Water gets in, freezes, expands ~9%, and Calgary gives it 40-60 freeze-thaw cycles a year. A $15 tube of polyurethane sealant from any hardware store stops a hairline crack from becoming a $2,000 slab problem.

Rule of thumb: under 3 mm = seal it yourself. Over 12 mm or one side higher than the other = call a pro.
