Our first staff feature for Oxford Manor is the one and only, Saroj Dahal!

Originally from Nepal, Saroj joined the Oxford Manor team as a Restorative Rehabilitation Worker in 2024 and has quickly made his mark. He brings a versatility, stepping in for maintenance when needed and picking up new skills with ease.

One of his standouts is his true commitment to the residents he works with. He takes great pride in helping people regain independence in their daily routines and in creating an environment that feels safe and calm.

Saroj has also brought a piece of his own culture to the community, sharing stories, photos, and traditions from Nepal. He expressed that celebrating Christmas alongside residents and staff at the facility for the first time was his favourite GEM memory to date.

When asked about his goals, he didn’t hesitate with his answer: Wherever his career takes him, his priority will always be to make people's lives easier and more comfortable. His advice to anyone entering this field is to come with patience, listen actively, and bring a genuine passion for helping others.

This June, we’re featuring all things Oxford Manor!

Located in the heart of Halifax, Oxford Manor offers easy access to everything the city has to offer. Aside from the stellar location, what truly makes this facility special is the sense of community that exists within its walls.

The group of residents brings great personality to the space, and we’ve seen firsthand the strength of friendships between neighbours. In this community, time together is valued, and the care residents need is always close at hand.

Recreation is an important part of daily life at Oxford Manor. Music therapy, gardening, off-site outings, cultural events, and holiday celebrations are just a few of the activities planned for residents to enjoy and look forward to.

The staff also deserve recognition for the care and dedication they bring each day. They know their residents well; they care deeply, and it shows.

Together, the residents and staff have created a community worth celebrating, making us so proud to have them as part of the GEM Health Care family.

GEM Health Care was co-founded by Gloria Hussain, who was greatly influenced by her upbringing in the Philippines. This influence is reflected in every aspect of our operations, from the care we provide to our residents to the emphasis we place on family and our deep respect for elders.

This Filipino Heritage Month, we are proud to celebrate the heritage that GEM was built on and the people who carry it with them every day.

In celebration of the month, the community is gearing up for the 5th annual Philippine Fiesta! taking place from June 20 to 21, 2026, at the Garrison Grounds!

33 years ago, Melville Heights opened its doors in Halifax with a commitment to caring for seniors with dignity and to making them feel at home. Today, we can say wholeheartedly that commitment hasn't wavered.

To every resident, family member, team member, and volunteer who has been part of this community since 1992, we extend our sincerest thanks for helping build the incredible environment loved by all today.

Yesterday, GEM Health Care Group attended the State of the Province luncheon with the Honourable Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia.

It was great to reconnect with members of the business community and be part of an open conversation about where our province is today, the opportunities ahead, and the challenges we still need to work through together. We appreciated Premier Houston recognizing the healthcare sector and the progress that has been made. For our team, it was a reminder of the hard work and dedication our frontline staff bring every day as they care for and support our residents.

Some fun updates from Haven Manor!

Residents have been keeping busy lately with outings to the mall, Tim Hortons runs, meals out, and a bit of shopping.

Weekly bingo has also become a big hit. Residents and staff play together every week, making it a community favourite activity for the community to look forward to. This summer, the plan is to take it outside. If the weather cooperates, they are hoping to bring bingo to the Public Gardens, Point Pleasant Park, or the Di**le.

The Admiral’s Knitting Knook is held twice a month and gives residents a chance to come together, relax, and enjoy each other’s company while knitting or crocheting. It’s a welcoming group where residents can chat, share stories, and work on projects old and new.

The program is led by volunteer Fran Asseff, whose passion for knitting was inspired by her Aunt Marcie. Now 100 years old, Aunt Marcie still knits and continues to pass along stories, wisdom, and a love for the craft!

More than just a hobby, Knitting Knook helps residents stay active and engaged by supporting fine motor skills, mental sharpness, and emotional well-being, all while creating a strong sense of friendship and community.
