Wooden Memorials and Final Farewells
Merry Cemetery in Romania

In 1935 Stan Patras, began what was to become his lifelong calling. He designed, inscribed, carved and painted the first of what was to become 600 plus memorials which would pay tribute to local town’s folk who were interred at Merry Cemetery.

Each of these wooden memorials had a message and a rendering of the departed, the inset image portraying the person enjoying what they loved most in life or an illustration of how they died. Sometimes these depictions displayed the chosen trade or career of the deceased; all are celebrations of each person’s life and collectively they form a record of the history of the village.

These memorials are colourful renderings. They invite those visiting to explore and learn about the past. They remind onlookers of simple village life and the value of parting messages of the recently and not so recently deceased. Patras used colours symbolically. Green denoted life and red illustrated passion. Sky blue, the dominant colour of these memorials represented hope and freedom.

These internationally recognized memorials prompt us to remember the importance of:
“How I lived this life.”

Staying Healthy

When we experience a loss, our grief can manifest itself in many different ways. We can experience both physical and emotional effects which leave us fragile. Sleep routines are often disrupted, further dwindling our energies. Feeling good physically is a prerequisite to having the ability to handling the strain grief places us.

It’s about taking care of ourselves, physically, mentally and emotionally. The basics include getting adequate rest, having a balanced diet, drinking water and taking vitamins or supplements if needed. And as we all know, avoiding substances which have a negative impact on our health.

A healthy body has more energy to deal with stress, helping us think more clearly and allowing us to better handle the pressures associated with grief.

Food for thought: healthy life = heal thy life.

Your Goodbye, Your Way

We all have a way we approach life and a way we do things which stems from our past experiences. It’s about what provides us comfort and makes us happy. We drive a certain type of car, live in a certain neighbourhood and choose certain activities where we find enjoyment. Whether we’re aware of it or not, we’re always making choices about the life we live.

What about our funeral?

Is this a decision we want others to make on our behalf? Is a conversation with loved ones enough time for them to gather all the details of our choices, so that when the time comes, they will be able to take care of our wishes the way we would've wanted? Will they remember everything we’ve said?

As we all know, this is not the most pleasant subject to discuss. But, arranging ahead of time will make sure that those services we want are what we get. Having these decisions in place will make sure the details which are important to us, are recorded… and then they will form the blueprint for how we would like to say our goodbye to those whom we love and care for.

Please contact us to have information sent to you about planning in advance.
