VACATION MODE LOCKED IN
I will be taking the month of August off for my summer holidays. Naturally my clients asked all month long, what are you doing for your time off...my answer is a whole lotta rest, recharge, and planning my life for our busy winter lives. This work asks a lot of me and I take my rest time very seriously to ensure I'm ready and re-charged for my clients.

⚾⚽My kiddos are wrapping up summer baseball and soccer; this is my 16 year old son's last year of youth ball and listen...I AM NOT READY 😿.
👪 My parents are coming to visit from the United States this week. We're taking them around the area...hikes, beach time, taking in the kids sports, making my family sausage recipe, playing board games, sunshine and patio time. Hoping their dog and my two cats get along...
🥅💚💙 My daughter plays competitive hockey and we are involved, my husband is an assistant coach and I'm a co-manager. Her team hits the ice on August 14th, it always come so fast...
🏈 My son is doing football camp so I'll be the taxi...
🚗But also taking him out for driving lessons...
🚿I have a house to deep clean...we live like feral cats...ahem...I mean like real people...so we have some catching up to do before winter. My kitchen cabinets need a good scrub down, my kids need their mother to come "help" get their rooms re-organized and de-pack ratted.
📚Always working on my book stack...
📝Being self-employed, we never really get "time off" therefore I do have admin to do but I'm setting a boundary of 2 hours a day. I will respond to emails but I'm not monitoring closely. Gotta get my expense sheet updated (sigh), do my notes (notes are never-ending), do a mail-out, and get some creativity flowing around my social media posts.
🍎School is coming whether we like it or not...gotta review my kids shoe budget...
😎August is a great month for me; I think its because as a forever student, it feels like a "new year" is upon us and August is a transition month between seasons. So soaking in every last minute of summer is the real goal.

🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛I'm back August 31; my online booking is available for September!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!!

Even the changes you choose can feel like a lot.

If you're mid-transition such as a relationship shifting, a role ending, a season you're not quite through — you might be holding more than one truth at once. Relief and grief. Certainty and doubt. Uncomfortable, but not wrong. That's what change feels like.

Lately I've been moving through my own change. After years working alongside others, I've moved back to solo practice at Bright Raven. This is a change I chose, and one that still asked a lot of me. Someone important to me framed the decision as flying and landing a plane, and even though I'm not a natural flyer, it fit.

I'm the pilot, the role I chose and carry, as a business owner. And I'm not flying an empty plane: my husband and co-pilot beside me, and behind us the passengers who may feel every dip — my colleagues and our clients, my children, my family. That's part of why a "good" change can still feel heavy. Everyone in the plane has a stake in the ride.

The scary part, for me, was never the leap. It was the in-between — airborne and committed, the ground nowhere in sight, every instinct saying brace. You don't get to resolve every feeling before you arrive. You just keep flying it, one adjustment at a time.

Then the ground comes into view, and my whole body exhales. But the truth is that despite reaching the goal of landing the plane and the comfort of being on the ground, touchdown is never the finish line. You land, and you're still moving, rolling forward into what's next.

Arriving isn't the same as certainty. Forward is still forward, even when you can't see where you're rolling.

What's a change you 'landed' but only to find you were still rolling forward?

Some news from Bright Raven: I've decided to return to solo practice, and with that comes a difficult goodbye to two wonderful clinicians by the end of July.

Keira and Siobhán were a gift to this practice and to the clients they served. I've been fortunate to supervise and witness their growth, from their Masters placements through to building their own clinical voices within this practice. . They have showed tremendous professional and personal growth in their time with Bright Raven. I'm grateful for everything they brought to the clients they served, and I'm wholeheartedly rooting for them as they move forward.

As for Bright Raven, this kind of change is very human, isn't it? We move, we realign, we find ourselves again. Pivoting and returning to solo practice is exactly that for me: stepping into a new direction with the same values and the same commitment to the people I serve.

"They speak of my drinking but never my thirst." ~Scottish Proverb

This is one of the most profound truths in couples work.

We react to what we can see-the withdrawal, the anger, the silence. But emotions drive our behaviors and beneath every behaviour is a longing that hasn't been spoken out loud yet.

🐦‍⬛In Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), we explore the differences between the secondary emotions (what shows) and the primary emotions (what's underneath). When we learn about our primary emotions, we can change our behaviors that keep us stuck in unhealthy conflict. Primary emotions are very tender, hard to express, and can be scary to share but can also move us from conflict to caregiving.

We stop asking "why do you keep doing this?"
And start asking "what are you really thirsting for?"

💞When couples learn to speak from their longings — "I need to know I matter to you" — everything shifts.

Bittersweet Congratulations
💞It is bittersweet to announce the departure of Brittany McCrea from Bright Raven Psychotherapy at the end of April. Brittany has been an integral member of our team for 2 years and we are sad to see her leave as she focuses on her own private practice.

Brittany and I have been colleagues for over a decade. It has been a pleasure to be her clinical supervisor and witness her tremendous professional and personal growth over the years. Her qualities of determination, self-reflection, honesty, commitment, and caring heart have been gifts to every client she has served.

🐦‍⬛ Watching Brittany's growth has reminded me of why I hold clinical supervision so close to my heart. Second only to my role as a therapist, supervision is my most important calling. At its heart, it is a deeply relational endeavor centered on the professional and personal growth of clinicians who bring me their questions, their uncertainties, and their developing sense of self as healers.

To mentor someone in this work is a privilege I do not take lightly. I view mentorship of fellow therapists as an investment in the future of this field. When I sit with a clinician, whether they are newly licensed or seasoned in their practice, I am not simply reviewing cases or ensuring ethical compliance. I am walking alongside someone in the ongoing, often humbling process of becoming. Becoming more skilled, yes, but also becoming more self-aware, more grounded, and more capable of tolerating the profound weight that therapeutic work places on the human beings who do it.

💫 It has been my pleasure to walk alongside Brittany and to see her take this courageous step and launch Wellness Waves Psychotherapy. I could not be more proud. She has everything it takes — the heart, the ethics, and the grit — to build something truly meaningful. Join me in gratitude and congratulations to Brittany as she moves ahead with her future.

🐦‍⬛ Stress Awareness Month? In THIS economy?? Say Less!

I wrote this month’s Inside Voice column for everyone who is exhausted, doing their best, and quietly wondering if something is wrong with them.

😮‍💨 For anyone who absolutely cannot take one more inch of “awareness.”

As a therapist, I will always support stress management.
💞As a fellow human living in 2026, I also need to say: we are already (painfully) aware. Awareness isn't a change agent.

Nothing is wrong with you. The conditions are.

🌙And yet, people just flew around the Moon, together, describing themselves (and all of us) as “inescapably, beautifully linked,” and committed to the joy train.
For 10 days, we were beautifully reminded that awe is still possible and connection is still the strategy.

💫It's tough out here and you’re not entirely off the hook. Community care needs your participation, and joy needs your protection.

Tired of Fighting About Nothing? How to Stop Yelling and Start Listening

Every couple argues about the same things over and over. The dishes. Who cleans the counters the best. The schedule. Priorities. Money. But those topics? They're never really the point. What's underneath your most common arguments might surprise you. What hurts most in the fighting is not feeling heard or valued and worry over losing connection.

Feelings being the key word. In this edition of Brooke's Inside Voice, learn more about how deeper feelings, not just anger frustration and confusion, fuel your most common arguments and how to change the cycle.
