Things that go bump in the night…
Deadlines.
Notifications.
Racing thoughts.
And your brain suddenly remembering that embarrassing thing you said in 2007.
Sometimes the scariest thing in the room is simply a mind that will. not. switch. off.
That’s part of what makes floating so interesting.
Floatation-REST—Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy—is designed to dramatically reduce the amount of outside sensory information your brain has to process. Light, sound, movement, pressure and other external stimulation are minimized, giving your system far less to respond to.
And researchers have found some promising results.
In one study of people experiencing anxiety and stress-related conditions, a single float session was associated with significant reductions in state anxiety, stress and muscle tension, along with increases in relaxation, serenity and feeling peaceful.
A separate controlled study found that floating produced greater reductions in anxiety and muscle tension—and greater feelings of relaxation and serenity—than a relaxing comparison activity. Researchers also observed reductions in blood pressure during the float and increased awareness of internal sensations such as breathing and heartbeat.
Does that mean every thought magically disappears the second you close the float-room door?
Probably not.
But when your brain isn't being asked to process quite so much from the outside world, you may find a little more space between the thoughts.
A little less noise.
A little more breathing room.
A little more quiet upstairs.
So if your thoughts have been the things going bump in the night lately…
Maybe it’s time to float.
