Not only is May Preeclampsia Awareness Month, but May 22 is World Preeclampsia Day.

Preeclampsia is a potentially serious pregnancy complication that can affect both mother and baby. Unfortunately, the exact cause of preeclampsia is unknown, and the only cure is delivery of the baby.

That’s why regular prenatal visits and screenings are so important. Routine monitoring of blood pressure, urine protein and other symptoms can help detect preeclampsia early and reduce the risk of serious complications.

🌸 April showers brought… LOTS of babies! 👶💕

This April, we welcomed 272 babies on our Women and Babies Unit — perfectly split at 136 girls and 136 boys! 💗💙

Our busiest day was April 15 with 14 babies arriving!

Welcome Crystal! She has joined Austin, Monica, Jen, and Justine on the green team! She will be with us until March 2027. 💚

Here's a little bit about her:

Crystal is a senior midwifery student at McMaster University, bringing a rich background in education and a deep personal connection to birth as a mother. Before beginning her journey into midwifery, she worked as a teacher, which helped shape her calm, supportive, and communicative approach to care. She's honoured to be part of the care team during her placement and looks forward to learning from and alongside the families she will be supporting.

Did you know? Midwives are registered health care professionals who provide primary care to women during pregnancy, labour and normal vaginal deliveries. They also provide care to mothers and babies during their first several weeks postpartum. 🍼

​On International Day of the Midwife, we celebrate every midwife! At Niagara Midwives, in our community, and around the world.
