Yesterday, we had the privilege of witnessing a remarkable tribute at Stella Maris Church as members of the Saint John Fire Department and IAFF gathered to honour one of their own.

Whether active or retired, the bonds formed through years of service often extend far beyond the station doors.

Moments like this are a reminder that the fire service is more than a profession—it is a community built on respect, shared experiences, and a commitment to one another.

As funeral professionals, we are continually humbled by the traditions, honour guards, and acts of remembrance that families, friends, colleagues, and organizations bring to a service.

They remind us that a funeral is not only a farewell, but also an opportunity to recognize the impact a person had on those around them and the legacy they leave behind.

We are honoured to be called upon in moments like these. To witness the respect, fellowship, and traditions that surround a life well lived is a privilege we never take for granted.

It is our responsibility, and our honour, to help provide the space where communities can gather, remember, and pay tribute to one of their own.

Accessibility is something many people don't think about until they need it.

When Fundy Funeral Home was built in the early 1990s, it was designed with the needs of our community in mind.

As our facility has grown through several expansions over the years, our commitment to accessibility and inclusion has remained a guiding principle.

From the moment families arrive, every effort has been made to ensure our funeral home is welcoming and easy to navigate.

Our property includes eight designated accessible parking spaces located near the main entrance, automatic entrance doors, spacious single-user washrooms, clear signage, and wide, comfortable gathering areas designed to accommodate people of all ages and abilities.

At our front office, the main service counter includes an integrated lowered section, allowing individuals who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices to comfortably meet with our staff at an accessible height.

It is one of many features that reflects our belief that every person should feel respected, welcomed, and included.

During a time when families have so much on their minds, we believe the environment around them should be one less thing to worry about.

Creating a space that is comfortable and accessible for all has been part of our philosophy from the beginning, and it continues to guide us today.

One day, someone will tell a story about you.

It probably won’t be about what you owned, what was in your bank account, or how busy your schedule was.

It will be about a moment.

A kindness they never forgot.

A laugh you shared.

A piece of advice that stayed with them.

A time you showed up when it mattered.

The stories that last are often the simplest ones.

A story worth sharing.

After his wife died, a man left her closet untouched.

Not because he thought he should.

He just wasn’t ready.

A couple of years later, he finally decided to go through it.

As he emptied the pockets of an old coat, he found a folded piece of paper.

It was a note in her handwriting.

Nothing profound.

No grand message.

Just a quick reminder she had written to herself years earlier:

“Don’t forget — everything will be okay.”

He laughed when he found it.

Then he sat down for a minute.

Of all the days to come across that note, it happened to be one of the harder ones.

Coincidence? Maybe.

But it’s funny how life works sometimes.

Chances are it isn't perfect.

Someone's eyes are closed.
The lighting is off.
The background is messy.

And yet, years from now, none of those things will matter.

What will matter is who was in the picture.

Sometimes the photos we treasure most are the ones we almost didn't take.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞?

It's a question many people ask.

The truth is, funeral service isn't about death. It's about people.

It's about answering a phone call at 2 a.m. from a family whose world has just changed forever.

It's about listening when someone needs to tell a story for the tenth time because they're afraid those memories will fade.

It's about helping a husband choose flowers for his wife, a daughter write a tribute to her father, or a family navigate one of the hardest weeks of their lives.

There are easier careers. There are jobs with more predictable hours.

But few professions offer the opportunity to make such a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Those who work in funeral service don't do it because it's easy.

They do it because every family deserves compassion. Every life deserves to be honoured. And every person deserves to feel supported when they need it most.

At the end of the day, what keeps many of us here isn't the work itself.

It's the privilege of serving people when they need kindness the most.
