I still find the sphenoid bone absolutely fascinating. š
Even after years of studying the body, there are certain connections that still make me stop and think, Wow.
The sphenoid is one of them.
This small, butterfly-shaped bone sits deep in the centre of the skull, yet it connects and articulates with multiple bones of the cranium and face. It also sits in an incredibly important neighbourhoodāclose to structures involved in vision, major nerves and blood vessels, the sinuses, and the pituitary gland.
So when I'm looking at patterns in the body, I don't automatically think only about the area where someone feels discomfort.
Someone may come in with recurring headaches or migraines.
Changes around the sphenoid can sometimes be part of the bigger picture when there are visual or eye-strain complaints.
And then we can look much farther away.
Because the head, spine, fascia, posture and pelvis don't function as separate pieces, an imbalance higher in the body can exist alongside compensations all the way down through the hipsāand vice versa.
That is what continues to fascinate me.
How can something so small be connected to so much?
The more I learn about the human body, the less I see individual parts.
I see relationships.
I see compensation.
I see one beautifully interconnected system.
And apparently, I'm still the person who enjoys sitting with my morning coffee and an anatomy book, discovering one more connection. āšš
