Myth vs Fact for the week! 💡

Myth: “Speech therapy is just for children.”

Fact: Speech-Language Pathologists support individuals across the lifespan — from toddlers learning their first words to adults experiencing communication or swallowing difficulties after stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, and more.

SLPs work with speech, language, social communication, voice, fluency, cognition, and swallowing needs at all ages. Communication support is important throughout the lifespan! 💬

Myth vs Fact! 💡

In honour of Speech & Hearing Month, we’re continuing our series sharing common myths and facts about speech-language pathology and communication development.

Myth: “Bilingualism causes speech or language delays.”

Fact: Research shows that learning more than one language does not cause speech or language delays. Children are capable of learning multiple languages at the same time, even if they sometimes mix languages while learning — this is a normal part of bilingual development.

Supporting a child’s home language is important for communication, connection, and cultural identity 💛🌎

Myth vs Fact! 💡

In honour of Speech & Hearing Month, we’ll be sharing common myths and facts about speech-language pathology each week to help build awareness and support understanding of communication development.

Myth: “They’ll grow out of it.”

Fact: While some children do catch up on their own, others benefit from early support. Waiting can sometimes allow challenges to become more noticeable over time.

Early intervention helps build strong communication skills and can support confidence, learning, and social interaction.

If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language, it’s always okay to reach out and ask questions — we’re here to help 💛
